i have here, a "test modem" that has a speacial firmware in it allowing it to be used at any home, using any address, and runs at 50meg down and 5 meg up.

i have tried using a WRT150n (dd-wrt) on this modem but for some strange reason, the router began to not overheat, but also couldnt handle the download but was about to handle upload just fine. which was

20mbps down and 5mbps up

next i used a WRT300n v1 (tomato) and i tried running a speed test on it over wired and wireless. both giving me 30mbps down and 5mbps up.

we did have a Belkin 54G router back. it kept cutting out and i thought it was because we had dieing router so my dad replaced it with a Cisco DPC3825. itnernet was working flawlessly for a year and then the internet started to cut out again. so that was replaced with a Netgear CG3000D. still does the same thing though.

ANYWAY

now my actual internet connection is 20mbps down and 1.80mbps up. or at least i think it is (last time i checked it was 12mbps down and 1.80mbps up).

now right now, that 50meg is doing just fine if i hook directly up to computer. but if i hook it up to one of the routers, everyhting starts to disconnect and i have to reconnect, router gets hot, etc etc.

does this mean we need to get a motorola modem and buy a very VERY beefy router like a E4200? or E3200?

EDIT: just ran another speed test on the WRT300n. its now going at 49mbps if i try it on my main desktop.

You didn't explain if you are doing wired or wireless. If you are doing wireless, depending on the connection that's negotiated, your download can be limited by the wireless.

If you are torrenting, reduce your settings (# of connections) and you'll no longer have router issues. Typically, thats what overloads home routers as internet download speeds aren't enough to really stress them. If you compare the experience of usenet downloading to torrent downloading, you'll find there is no where near the amount of frequent disconnect reports with usenet - because it doesn't spawn and eliminate hundreds of connections the way torrenting does.

Also, your "test modem" is likely using hacked firmware and fraudulent MACs, and can earn a call from the ISP pretty quickly (or termination of a neighbor's service), and generally isn't an ethical thing to do. Ref: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/06/ryan-harris-sentencing/

im testing by both wired and wireless.

did i mention that my dad actually works at the ISP that we are with? thats how he has the test modem. he uses it whenever he has to go to someones house to test their internet connection. which would be replace their (or ours) modem, hook this one in, and then run some speed tests and utilities to make sure that the line is fine. this is a great way to finding if its the line thats having issues or the customers modem.

EDIT: MAN this thread is old. test modem is already back at the head end anyway.

Well you left that out.

You also didn't provide any info about which results were wired or wireless. Pretty much, you didn't say anything that can be used to help or give advice.

wow...didnt know what was hooked up mattered.

well anyway, i had it on my pentium 3 desktop. but after seeing the results i got i tried my core i5 setup. still the same....but then it changed to 50mbps after a second try.

man i am sorry if i am confusing you guys. im like a specialist at confusion when it comes to that. even my own confusion gets the best of me!

I hope by "test modem" you aren't referring to a hacked cable modem for Theft of Service. Besides working as an employee or with permission of the ISP, I can't think of a reason for you to possess a modem with that can .

Good luck with your project though.

again, my dad works for the company. they GAVE him a test modem that he can use for testing. he can even take it home with him and use it there to test his own connection, speed, and so on.

i used it to test my internet in every way possible. even server hosting.
