would like some input on whether or not this is a nice build, I'm open to any changes on which is better suit for this or that. Like to stick with AMD and also have a "BLUE' theme to it.

Also, is the PSU too much? Can I get away with going less, like 850? (<--which I bought) I have some other accessories, as such.
Fan Controller, new keyboard and mouse, 24" samsung LCD screen with LED backlit...I'm literally building my rig as if I had "nothing"

Thanks ahead of time

according to http://support.asus.com/powersupply.aspx

it's saying I need at least 1000w....why is this?

The HD 6870 GPU probably uses around 100-125w load, so having two of them will require up to 250w. I don't really see you needing over 750w.

My recommendation would be to go with an FX-8320 or FX-8350 because they have the new piledriver architecture which is a little faster than the FX-8150 you're looking at with bulldozer architecture. Otherwise the system looks great.

I appreciate your input on the CPU, but I ended up going with the 8150 due to the simple fact I got it for less than $150...

Just a quick question and answer with the 6+2 power phases on his board will it support the AMD FX-8150 When OCing his set up yes or no! I am no AMD Guru here, but i have seen people struggling with the wrong Mobo's due to this. Some of the later AMD CPU's are power Hogs i think this needs more attention when recommending Mobo's to Newbies. AJ. :)

p.s. If i have this wrong i will stand corrected by anyone!

LOL I clicked on 20 links just to see the build... list the part AND the link!! :p

That aside, why 6 series GPU's? 7 series is out... Get those (7850/7870). Also, why are you crossfiring @ 1920x1080 resolution? Its not needed at all. Take the $360 for 2 and get a single 7950 for a bit less.

Also, 2 6870's would EASILY run on a 750W PSU, wingman is spot on.

The M5A99X EVO r2 does have 6+2 power phases, which would probably be fine by itself. But it also has Asus' new Digi VRM control which means more consistency in managing the voltage going to the CPU. That board will have no problem overclocking the FX 8320. I just got done doing a ton of research on this because I'm building a new octo-core AMD rig myself. I ended up going with a cheaper Gigabyte board but the Asus M5A99X was one that I was also considering.

Thanks for your reply i watched a newbie trying to OC his board just the other day after 150 posts trying to work out what was wrong! Again it turned out poor power phases on a Mobo, now he is junking that and having to buy again. Another Mobo oocha bye for now. AJ.

Earth, money's somewhat tight and simply, I would like to have more smooth frames on 1 screen than less/choppy frames on two..., which they were not $180 each when I bought them as well, so I decided to go with that...later in the future I will eventually upgrade to dual screen, and 7 series gpu's.

But for my 1ST build I would like to start small...just like everyone and anyone else should...IMO

So you already have those cards? That would have been good to know initially...I still would have not went CrossfireX off the bat as you now have no upgrade path (which is ok, but I still would have spent money on a SINGLE more powerful card, then when you want to upgrade to dual monitors, Crossfire/SLI that card).

getting back to the build after some out of town work related problems, lets get down to the nitty gritty...

Debating ongoing with a GIGABYTE 990FX UD3 mobo, over the M5A99X EVO R2.0 mobo....same compatibility with CPU and MEMORY, so i'm good there...any thoughts?

this time, i haven't bought it yet...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

umm..yeah but he had a M5A97. thats 4+2. i can testify to the m5a99x that it can power a [email protected], so 4ghz won`t be a problem

Well here is a list of AMD motherboards with the Power Phases and whether they are OK for overclocking ETC. Just take a look and see for yourself what boards are good and will match your CPU! What your aiming for is a board with 8+2 or above, as i said its a basic guide. AJ.

1, http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database#post_12462681

What i am trying to do here is learning you to help yourself a little as well! ;)

Just because I do NOT know, why is it better to have 8+2 rather than 6+2 besides the obvious?

thank you for all the help!

cinco, to simplify it, the VRM is what provides the CPU with power. At stock clocks a decent board will suit you fine. The FX 8 series processors, are power hungry when overclocked. If the chip doesn't receive enough power, it will be unstable. With that said I have a FX 8350 on the 1st gen ASUS board you picked and have been able to get it to 5.0 ghz. You should have no problems Oc'ing it to 4.0 on that board.

One other thing I would like to point out is, the Corsair RAM is tall, you may have clearance issues with your heatsink. Just check the specs on both to make sure they will fit.

thank you for the info. with the measurements of the heatsink and the RAM, i've thought about that, so i've decided to keep my mind open on getting the Corsair Hydro H80: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181016 in case that does become a problem and take back the Tuniq 120

The tuniq 120 does help out the "blue" theme so much, but im not against water cooling the cpu
