Last one I came across had a sata and a floppy smaller type power, assumed they were all like this except the drive thats turned up today has one single plug that I don't recognize.

How common is this nowdays?
 
Quite common, actually. Many drives have a SATA connector that has power on one side, data on the other.
 
Hard to visualize what your talking about exactly. But as far as laptops Id say they vary a lot.

what make and model ? any pictures available ??
 
It is a Panasonic Blu-ray DVD drive UJ-120.

Seem's it is a PATA connection?? Whatever that is. Is it only used in laptops?
 
That's it.

New one turned up today and the sata power seems half size.

Anyone got a name for this? Need to get an adapter to normal sata power size.
