Hello and thanks for taking time to review. I am looking for sub $150 motherboard for overclocking FX Vis.

These are the boards I'm currently considering - but I'm open to suggestions. I will use closed watercooling.

MSI 990FXA-GD65V2 ATX AMD Motherboard

ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard ( Are the Gigabyte v3 boards still a problem? )

Thanks,

Mike

^^+1^^ I'd go with Blaylock on that. Most definately if you plan on using an 8 core. With a six core I would suggest the M5A99FX Pro R2 at the least.

I use a very similar Asus board to the one you linked to with my FX8350 and have had good success so far. As others have said though, if you can save a bit, go with one of the more robust boards.

If the $150 budget isn't flexible I would suggest this board.

IF you could save up a bit and spent an extra $20-$30 I would recommend you buy one of these.

#1 ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 NON-GEN3 $180
or
#2 ASRock 990FX Extreme9 $170

I used to be what you would call a MSI fanboy but they have really soured on me since getting into overclocking. (you've been cautioned) The Giga UD3 has mixed results if you read a bunch of threads so that's a bit of a gamble too.

I've been waffling between the 8350 & 6350. I feel comfortable in the price range of the boards you linked - is there one you prefer over the other? On the Sabertooth, does the R2 indicate it's the 2nd revision?

I'm looking into getting the ASRock EXT9 because I'm interested in it's 'Fast Boot' option when used with an SSD(which I will need next). It also is listed with a more robust VRM @12+1 (vs. 8+1 on the Sabertooth and UD7) making it more geared for higher draw chips such as the FX8xxx and FX9xxx. (in theory anyhow)

Just an FYI "Blaylock" about the listing of VRM phases. The newer Sabertooth R2.0 has 8 + 2 + 2 for the memory itself with LLC now on the memory. The newer CHV-Z has the same numbering in 8 + 2 + 2 and imagine it too will put out 300Amps to the processor like the original CHV did; which hardly any of the other boards do, no matter how many phases they have listed.

My Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional will clock my FX-8350 just as fast as my CHV non-Z will and it seems the new Asrock EXT9 is up there now as well. I have not seen the bios of the Asrock EXT9 but if it was as good as the Fatal1ty mobo, then it should be good for FX also.
RGone...

I also have a FX 6350 paired with a M5A99FX Pro R2 from ASUS. I would have no qualms recommending that combo. You get a lot less heat to deal with compared to the 8350 and the 6350 was a nice chip. I have it at 4.6 on air ina roomy Antec1200 case with a CM-V8 cooler. I'm sure with a decent water set-up you could do better.

 Nice pair and a combo deal to boot. Should do you well with decent cooling. You never said much about your "closed loop" cooling.??
