brute force! Get a screwdriver, insert between 'sink and card, and twist till it pops off.

vid cards are a lot stronger than you think! Except for the puny new BGA stuff, those are weak as hell- RAM modules popping off right and left, careful with those....

Or just get some canned air and hose it at the 'sink held upside down- the propellent can get to -50 or better, way colder than the average fridge.

I you might think this is a stupid question, I just want to make sure. If it's an nvidia card, are you sure that the push pins are not holding the card in place? Just want to make sure...

This is like his third post on the subject, i mentioned that to him already.

Really man, just yank it off! Twist it, it won't break! Forget the freezing and heating crap, just do it room temp, it'll come off. You're probably being way to gentle. Worst case scenario, just shove a knife between the sink and gpu.

You ever take an old silicon board and tried to break it (like an old 2400 modem or something)? They are TOUGH. I whipped those things full strength on the ground and it only chipped. They don't make these things so fragile that a little fall is gonna break em.

A butterknife seems to always work best for me, use the credit card as stated and 15 min. in the freezer, try all corners and dont use brute force.....It will pop off, just find the area(corner) with the least amount of glue.

removal

or start working into those corners and cutting through the glue with a flat razor blade... then ditto on the butterknife, like SSSam suggested... or even a flathead screwdriver. I had a hell of a time removing my AK31's NB heatsink, but a little work was time well spent, because eventually the glue released and she popped right off. A little bit of twisting back and forth action on the sink can help loosen the glue as well.

Library cards, is there nothing they can't do??? I popped it off, I used my library card instead of a credit card and then twisted the knife (butter) to pop it up. Although the 2 hours in the fridge and my attempts to twist it off may have softened it up a bit.

Glad it finally worked for you hombre....PS I forget, what kind of card was this?

I have removed at least a dozen ATI heatsinks and I have a nice pile of them.

When I go to the pistol range next time I am going to blast them....And my AOL CD collection (My lasermax loves aiming at those shiny AOL CD prisms)

It's my Rage Fury Pro, I'm not using it right now and I wanted to get some practice before trying to de-sink my MX400.

Instead of shooting those sinks you could always cut them up and use them as ram sinks for your video cards.

Hey guys.....here's a tip. There is NOTHING in your case you should be taking a flathead screwdriver to. I'm amazed.

Maybe it just lack of patience. The best method I've found.....go out to a hardware store and buy the flat razor blades. Most times you can get them in a little case. Use that to seperate the heatsink from the GPU. Insert in the gap....with angle TOWARDS the heatsink....not the GPU.

Easiest thing to happen with a screwdriver would be butchered bridges....thus resulting in a non-working vid. card.

I heard a rumor that the Admins initiated CW by having him remove the heatsinks from a Voodoo 5 with his teeth...

Is this true CW?

I use a flathead screwdriver in my case all the time, it's the easiest way to flip individual switches in a switchbank.

Had to use my teeth....which wasn't really a problem cause I can open my mouth so wide, I just made sure I stuck my huge buck teeth between the GPU & heatsink.

and to eobard....okay....there IS one use for a flathead screwdriver!
