Geneal "Comp = teh screwed" Qestion

Ok I have been having problems of late with my computer. Programs seem to like to crash. Pretty damned often. And then they dont work again, so I have to restart the computer. So I restart.... aaaannnnddd.... it doesnt work!

Goodie! When rebooting it alway seems to freeze. After bios when it says "bla bla DMI pool" it freezes. Sometimes I dont even get that message and it freezes. Sometimes the widows logon come on and it freezes. Sometimes it gets past that and freezes. It sure likes the freeze : (

So I thought maybe that windows is screwed, time to reformat! So I stuck in the dos boot disc. Once it froze when i tried to select to boot with cd support. once it froze in teh middle of loading. once it froze when i was at the part where it says "loading your computer this might take awhile". Then it froze after the next reboot when it was finally done loading.

As you can tell I have to reload a lot : (. Also everything takes FOREVER to load now. IE takes about 10 seconds to load. Sometimes my comp stops responding for 5 seconds when I open a menu in windows. I tried playing CS and I ended up taking about 10 mins to get into a server, where I had about 2000 ping.

What could be the matter with my computer? I have only had it for about 10-11 months now. I have:

1000 Mhz Athlon T-bird
ECS K7VZA Mobo
384MB of ram. Ones PNY crap from best buy the other is some japanese company I cant remeber which. toshiba, mitsubishi, samsung, toyota i have no idea -_-;;;
I had an nvidia vanta LT until i switched to a geforce2ti a day ago.
Some crappy $40 case i got from Fry's electrnoics that came with a 250w KingStar power supply.
Old crappy 6gb hard drive i got like 3 years ago....

Anyone have any idea which one of these is the culprit? Thanks for the input guys.

Just a thought. What are your temps? Did you knock your h/s when you put the new vid card in? Did you try changing back to the old vid card? Was this happening before you switched vid cards?

Well basically this has been happening for awhile. But it got worse when I downloaded some stuff I saw in a thread on the video cards section. It actually got a LOT worse since I downloaded this. Thats why I tried to use the DOS boot up floppy and stick in a fresh new windows. But I cant get it to work very well. Basically before I even downloaded anything I still had the problems with it freezing when I tried to boot the computer. And sometimes it seems to turn itself on after i shutdown, i forgot to mention that. Now that I have downloaded a lot of different "tweaks" that I saw on the net, it has gotten worse.
So I know its not software only.

Maybe there is something wrong with the ram. try different ram if you have it or try only one stick of ram if you have more then one (if it still happens try the 2nd or third stick one at a time).

if its not that then maybe you'r hard drive is on its way out or you have a virus. can't think of anything else off the top of my head, other then cleaning out all the dust and reseating your cards.

just reread your specs, that power suppl is kinda weak for your setup, think about replacing it, it could most definetly be resposable for the crashes especially if it has been happening from day one with that cpu/mobo.

Could it be the power supply? Its only 250W. And it got it from FRY'S ( ugh Im never shopping there again -_- ). It was a $40 ATX case with the power supply thats kinda cheap. Or how about the mobo? Anyone heard anything good or bad about ECS or their K7VZA model?

Yeah the power supply could be causing it, you might want to check the ram first (just cause its easier/cheaper then buying a new power supply) but if the ram is ok the i'd say the power supply is next in line.

Doesn't the reformat kinda rule out viruses.

Good points all around, but if he wants to look at the psu, he could start unplugging non critical drives, cd, floppy, taking out sound cards, modems, and reduce the load. His psu ought to be able to run cpu, mobo, video, and hdd.

He has two ram sticks, try one alone, then the other. If you have an old hard drive lying around, try it.

Wierd part is the lockups early in the bootup. He may have a bad mobo, or need a bios flash or something, not really my area though.
