choppy ti200

I've got a hercules gf3 ti200, slightly overclocked....

when i play jedi knight 2 at 1024x768, it gets choppy at the beginning of some levels (e.g right before the level with the huge garbage disposal facility). but during those levels, while i'm running around and blasting things, everything runs smooth.

also sometimes in mohaa, it will stutter for a second, and then it's fine again...

anyone have any idea what is causing these random stutters?
I doubt it's my hd. I've got a 7200rpm maxtor ata133 hooked up to the ata100 port of my mobo.

I still say it's the drive. Perhaps its fragmented. Most likely it is, so just defrag and see what happens.

In any case, it's probably just loading up textures and whatnot a bit after the level loads, no big deal. Those are some newer, heavy duty games so they probably have plenty of crap to load. I don't think it's anything to do with the video card.

yeah. it is the drive...

I turned the volume down, and everytime the hd would spin, the game got choppy. it happens during the middle of the game too. (swapping?)

I guess i have to live with it.. unless there's a way to have the hd spin less? or perhaps have it optimized?

you could snag ore ram, that might help, but most of the graphics shpuld be stored in the vid ram. Ti200's just get a bit choppy sometimes with newer games. Do u have antialiasing turned on?

yah. AA is turned off. It's unfortunate that these cards get choppy in the middle of a game

.... and they said 64MB was enough......

I'm beginning to wonder if this card will even be able to handle Doom 3.

What about your regular ram? From your sig you only have 128 (unless 128/8 means something else...), that's a bare minimum nowadays. I'm sure a 128meg stick would be cheap. I got 512 for $140, but that was DDR, I dunno about rdram. That would cut down swapping alot.

If I were you, I'd put a little more cooling to the card, and run it up a bit higher. I have a GF2 Ti, and I've only done two ghetto mods. I put a socket 7 fan on top of the tiny fan that is on the stock heatsink. And I made a holder out of hanger wire that holds a 60 mm case fan just above the the top of the card, on the opposite side of the GPU. Ok, three things, I also lapped the cheesy little GPU heatsink. These have allowed me to run it at 294/444, with no ramsinks. Any higher and I get artifacts. I had to bump I/O voltage to 3.5 for the core to avoid lockups. Not a cure all, but I think it would help.

I have 256mb of ram

the OS and program files are installed on the C:\ partition, with a 384mb+ windows-managed swap file.

The games are installed on the D:\ partition, and I just noticed that there is no swap file in the d:\ partition.

So should I fix the swap file size to 384mb in the c:\ and add another swap file to d:\ ?

What operating system are you running? I would also try and install new Via 4in1's, they might help with your hard drive speed.
