Reliable hardrives

What brands are the nost reliable and quiet. looking to buy probably a 40gb, 60gb, and 80gb 7200. Have used Maxtor, Western Digital and Fujitsu. How are the Samsung drives? IBM?
Quantum?

If you want reliability, screw fujitsu, screw samsung, especially screw Western Digital and IBM, screw Quantum were bought by Maxtor, get a Maxtor drive plus a hard drive cooler.
And get 40GBx2 (if you want 80GB), screw RAID.

I really like Seagate. I have used Maxtor, the one I had died after a month, IBM, lasted longer than the Maxtor but was loosing data alot, and Western Digital, went through three replacements in 3 years. But I can say that thier customer service dept is great. But again I recomend Seagate.

that really is a lot of screwing up, Western Digital have the best reputation for screwing up, last year IBM caught up with them, but they both seemed to have calmed down at the moment with their newest models. If you want reliability then surround it with 10 delta fans, although even then hard drives fail.

I have one 40 gig Samsung running 24/7 almost for 1 year no issues. And the HD in sig all working fine. They all have fans on them though. The problems is the bigger the drive the potential for bigger loses so a CD-RW is a must

i wnat an ibm really bad because they are fast but from what ive heard their reliability sucks. you would think after 6 months of lawsuits they would have fixed something

I used western digital hard drives many times and none of them have "screwed up". Anyway in my opinion, I would buy maxtor or western digital.

I've used dozens of IBM 60GXPs in the past two years, (I build computers for a living) and I have had no problems with them, provided that they have some airflow either directly across them or near them. Heat is the enemy.
Seagate Barracuda IV's however, don't have a problem with heat and are quieter than any hard drive I have ever used. Not quite as fast as the IBM's, but you'll probably never notice the difference, outside of hard drive benchmarks.
I've used Maxtor's a lot, in the past, and had lots of problems with them. Used a few Western Digital and haven't had problems, but they are louder than other drives.

Would say Quantum for reliability but since they were bought out by Maxtor i say Maxtor. can't go wrong

I say the exact opposite, in basically that order.
Fujitsu is the best in reliability, then Seagate, Samsung, WD, IBM... Maxtor is at the bottom of my list, there is a pile of dead ones at the bottom of my desk.

it all depends on the use and size, i have installed 5 different western digitals and all but one worked fine. I also have installed 5 maxtors in various systems and 2 died. finally, samsung, my roommate uses a samsung and it is slow but it is a trooper. he has dropped his from standing to a concrete sidewalk and the hard drive was reformated and now runs windows 2000. these are all just stories. with any brand there will be winners and losers.

i think in th epresent, all the new drives these companies are putting out will be good drives under normal use. I also can say my old fujitsu 10gig lasted for ever with a few mishaps. You start to roll the dice of chance when you run components out of spec.

How do you know Samsung is bad? They just recently started getting into the haad drive market. Although I do agree with you that maxtor makes good drives.
