Question SCSI hard drive usage question.

I have an IBM SCSI 10Krpm hdd, and have only an old scsi card, say 4 or 5 years old card. The drive is suppossed to have a very fast throughput, but will the card I am using limit it?
Should I buy a new one or would it not make a difference?
(the old card can handle the smaller connector).

We need a little more information to be able to tell. The models of the drive and card would be nice. It is possible that the card would not support the drive at all.

Yeah, at least the types of scsi would help, us in fast or ultra and so on. My card is around 4 years old, but it still has 40mps burst, so it may still be a good card.

Well off hand, I know the hdd is an ULTRA3. I will check the card when I get home from work.
I really should have given the specific info first!

If the drive is U3(160?) then the burst rate will be smaller Im sure, I dont know if it will effect overall performance much though.

If it's a good 10k rpm drive only U160 would utilize its capabilities, but the controllers are pricey.

That controller card is probably UltraWide, which is 40mb/s. Get an Adaptec 29160, a PCI U160 card. It will make you happy with it's performance and it will suit any drive with a 68-pin or 80-pin SCA connector (with 68-80 adapter). That drive being a 10k means it is at least U2W, which is 80mb/s and probably U2W-LVD (no difference in speed, just electrical interface).

The 29160, AFAIK, will run a U2W or U2W-LVD drive as well as a U160.
