DVD-Ram Whats good

I know not many people have them, but my Pops has offered to buy me one for my B-Day. I don't really know whats good out there and its hard to find reviews on them. ANyone know of any good Ram drives out on the market.

Preferably Combo Dvd-Ram/Cd Burner. Got a limit of 500.

I have been pleased with my Sony Cd drive so you want to check a Sony out. Did you look in consumer reports?

I think I am going to go with the Philips.
Can you play your DVDs in any DVD player? Is there any compatiblity issues you have come across?
And are the DVD+RW, DVD+R drives the only ones that you can play in a box DVD player?
Sorry for the questions, I just want to make sure I know what I am getting into.
Thanks.
