2 120gxp or 2 wd800jb?

120gxp seems to run almost the same speed as the wd800jb in raid. Is it really worth approx. $60 total to have the wd800jb?

No, if you could get the JB version with the 8meg cache it would be, but the IBMs are rated as the second best HDDs, right behind the WDs with 8meg cache. The IBMs are considered better than the regular WDs

for any questions on harddrives the absolute best place to look is storagereview.com - they have the best tests and benchmarks on HDDs- check it out before buying

Storagereview.com does a great job testing drives. Another good recent shoot-out is at:

The IBM 120gxp's are pretty sweet drives. Good luck with your choice.

Peace

oops, my bad- you said the JB
well raid is gonna help the scores anyway- i guess the only way to make that call is to look at your wallet and at your comp

is that $60 spent better somewhere else in the system- then you may have your answer

I've heard of a lot of problems with drive failure with the GXP line, and the 120 GXP's are only krated for like 333 hrs/month (11 hrs/day). personally I'd go with the WD. i've had a WD 20 gig for about 2.5 years with no problems. also have had no problems with my maxtors (1 about 1 year old, 1 2 months old) both 60 GB.

I have not heard any problems with the 120GXP lines they have been flawless, the recommended time is only recommended and it works regardless. I've had 3 Western Digitals and they all screwed up and so have my friends, I would stay away from them because they are as reliable as s***. the 120GXP are faster than the WD (unless its the 8MB cache special edition which they don't make below 100GB).
In short: go for IBM or Maxtor.

actually now WD makes the JB in 80gig versions- googlegear.com has them. And any HDD maker has a few bad ones, i'd say that just about and brand is okay from a reliability standpoint, and I've heard that IBM has left the "deathstar" days in the dust, and overcompensated by making the 120s extra reliable.

It was only the 75GXP's that were having major problems. The 60GXP's and the 120GXP's are golden. The whole "333 hours" deal is just verbage to cover their butts after the 75GXP debacle. They have the same reliability rating as any other HD manufacturer.

That being said--the WD special editions with the 8MB cache are SWEET! I'd like to be able to afford a couple of THOSE in RAID 0!
