is the GeForce4 Ti4600 worth the price? or just go for the 4400?

there seems to be a sizeable price jump between the 4600 and 4400, is the 4600 really that much better? ... like an $80 difference...

... also on another note, what sound card is top noche right now? i mean is there a huge difference between say the Creative Labs Audigy Platinum eX and any 5.1 sound card?

I believe that is near impossilbe. Now a 4400 can go to 4600 speeds, but if memory serves me correctly the 4200 uses different memory than the 4400 and 4600's.

well, i dunno ... is the 4600 easily overclocked? if so, then it would be worth purchasing that, then that would enable me to get even better speeds right?

and 80 dollars is 80 dollars, so i will have to see how the rest of my system plays out ... just a maybe. i was just wondering if there was really a huge difference between the two... seems as though there should be, but i have never seen either in action, so i do not know...

the 4600ti will overclock but not as much as the 4400ti- they use the exact same GPU and in some cases the same memory. You can easily overclock the 4400ti to 4600 levels, but anandtech found that the stock 4600 ratings are about as far as that GPU can go- so IMHO the 4400ti is a much better value

here is a roundup of just about every 4600 and 4400 on the market:

I highly doubt that you could EASILY oc a 4200 to 4600 speeds, and as far as I know, the only card on the market that even comes close (and in some cases reaches 4600 speeds) are from the Gainward cards.

The TI4400 is the best value/performance card out there imho. Buy a Gainward, Visiontek, or Gainward, and here is where you can EASILY oc to 4600 speeds and beyond.

Does it justify spending $80 more on a 4600?? Sure, if you have cash coming out of your ears, but otherwise I'd spend that $80 on another part of my system (hard drives, ram, case modding, etc.) and grab up the TI4400.

I bought currently from newegg.com the Geforce 4 Ti4400 Leadtek , will I need to overclock my new card like a better hsf or is the big @SS heatsink and dual fans they got on there enough ?

Your stock heatsink will do you fine ReTiCuLeX, but if you want to get every ounce of oc'ing out of your new card, you might want to think about a 1U cooler, or simply replacing the paste under the heatsink with some Arctic Silver, and Arctic Silver/Alumina adhesive for the ram. :)

I got the Artic silver adheasive rite now should I use that to hold down the current Heatsink on the leadtek ? instead of there cheap paste ? all I really want is to be a lil faster then the 4600 and im fine :) thx for your help its really apreciated lol I haven't been on the forum in ages because of the buisness I run.

Sorry, that's flat out wrong.

Here's the lowdown:

The Ti4200 will get about 300 core (same core as the other Ti's, yes, but not of the Ti4600 quality) but the 4ns memory limits the overclocking potential. Reaching 600mhz is a challenge, likely 550 max with a good memory batch and no cooling/ramsinks.

The Ti4400 will get about 300 core and 600 memory speeds overclocked, sometimes higher, but with stock stuff you're almost guaranteed 300/600. The Ti4400 comes at 275/550 speeds, has 3.6ns memory. These are common facts.

The Ti4600 will get about 320 core (they use the best cores on the Ti4600 ;) ) and 700 memory (2.8 ns memory speeds by spec).

Obviously there are slight variations based on batches of items/components used, but these are pretty common scores for these cards. More cooling you can add the higher you will go, that's almost always true, but the threshold is higher for the Ti4600 because of the quality of the components (best cores and fastest spec memory).

My Ti4400 hits Ti4600 core speeds, but the ever important memory (3.6ns) will not make 650 without major artifacting.

Now, if we were talking percentages of increase the Ti4200, then 4400, then 4600... but a lower percentage of a Ti4600 is still higher than the highest percentage of the Ti4200 ;).

Leadtek Ti4400 => 300/650 on first try. :)

100% stable. Happy with Ti4600 results and have not tried to push it any further.

im very happy with my pny ti 4400>275@305&550@702 at performance settings, and when i want i candy i have 2 clock it down to 290&650,and there is no artifacts at all,i cant see spending the extra cash unless u want bragging rights.

yea, i will have to see how my system boils down - right now i am looking at the Ti4600, but i will see how things turn out, because i too feel that the 4600 is better by value (% wise) than the 4400. i mean maybe not, but i feel that in the long run it may be worth it.

I got a Ti4400 and haven't even felt the need to OC, it is a pretty strong card. Ti4600 is a waste of money unless you have to have bragging rights then by all means go for it. The specs on the 4600 are all bumped up a bit but there are no games out to use the full potential of it.
