CD-Rom lost! Bios picks it up, but Windows doesn't.

My wife told me the other day her CD-Rom was no longer working. I checked and it was not even in the Control Panel or Device Manager. I have replaced the CD-Rom itself with a new CL 52X and also put on the new cable. Still, it's not listed in Windows ME. I have never, ever, had this problem. Any ideas? I'm lost here? Thanks, Kent

Windows seeing the secondary IDE controller? We are going to need a lot more information like the motherboard or computer manufactorer.

It's my old system: SOYO 6BA+IV, PIII 650@866(5%), 256mg Mushkin PC-133-2,2,2, etc. It had just a generic CD-Rom, but I just installed the new CL. I ran the system at default 650 and still Windows did not see the CD-Rom. Upon boot it's listed as the Seconday Master, but when I get to Windows it's not there. Thanks for the help, Kent

In device manager is the secondary IDE controller there under Hard Disk controllers or something or another like that. If windows isn't seeing that then it can't see the drive.

That will probably work. I don't know how to add it, though you could try through the add new hardware and specify that device. Make sure it is turned on in the bios. Once you get that controller working, the CD rom will be seen.

The bios was one of the first things I checked. Nothing has been changed on this system. Man, this a real challenge now. Thanks again, Kent

Got it fixed!!! Went to Device Manager, Hard Disk Controllers- highlighted the Intel.........PCI Bus Master IDE Controller and went to properties. Then update driver and let Windows search. Windows ME then found the Secondary IDE Controller and the CD-Rom now works. Oh well, she needed a new CD-Rom anyway. Thanks for the help WIlliam. I really appreciate it. Kent

Wouldn't installing updated mobo drivers make windoze see the controler once again? Mine always "finds new hardware" everytime I do it, even though it's nothing new really.

Ha! posted while I's writing...it's cool you got it running.
