Webserver in Linux (Mandrake 8.2)

I checked the option to install the Apache Webserver when I configured my Linux at install but am having a hard time of actually using it, I type in http://localhost/ and I do see that my server is running, but whatever I place in that folder, i cannot see, it says that I am not authorized, any suggestions?

If you look the folder is owned by root, you either need to add your user to a group that owns the files or su to root to copy things in.

I used chown to change the owner to me before I asked this, still did not work

Try placing files in the correct folder - cant remember where exactly, under /home or /var methinks - while logged in as root.
