What will happen if...

What will happen if the power supply cannot provide enough power??

Just want to know you people's experience.

For me, one of my systems......the CPU frequency keeps waving! It waves down to 400MHZ LESS than it should have, and back to normal for a second, then waving again!(increase the vcore makes no difference)

Do you think this is one of the effects when the power supply isn't enough?

Most prominent are erratic or unexplained behavior and random reboots or shutdowns.

Does it include CPU frequency waving around?

I mean you won't see this problem UNLESS you use "real time frequency" in WCPUID, and keep watching it for a while.

When you overload the PSU the 12v 5v 3.3v etc lines start to jump to lower voltages, and they dont stay steady. This unsteady power is not good for your components and can damage them. CPUs will lock up, CD/DVD drives dont read data correctly, HDDs encounter data corruption. The list goes on and on...

Some people with not enough power have cold boot problem also. The CPU frequency is varies a bit, but it does not vary by much. I would say as long as it stays within 1 mhz it is fine.

Since I am a cheapass, I have all really old and weak PSUs- I have power trouble all the time. The problems it causes for me are:
  • random reboots
  • refusing to start on the first try- need to hit reset a few times
  • refusing to start at all
  • not recognizing all my RAM
  • hanging while locating IDE devices or just not finding any
  • overclocking is severely limited

I am using a 235watt PSU on my Duron 800@988, and booooy does it suck. Hey, at least it works most of the time

I have never ever had my CPU frequency change on me. The clock generator takes very little power, and is calibrated finely enough so it should stay within a few % of spec all the time.

Let me ask- are you running a Pentium4? Sounds more like it is clock throttling.
