my old dell

alright, well since i got a new computer, and my cs clan needed a server, i made my old p2 350, with 384 mb's of pc100 into a server. its running kinda slow, and since i cant put any more ram in it...i want to upgrade the cpu..i am looking at getting a 450 mhz XEON with 1mb of cache...now, the xeon is slot 2, and i dont know what slot type my dell is...how can i figure this out...cause i dont wanna buy a cpu, and then not be able to use it

also...can a regular P2 motherboard support a xeon processor?

nope...don't think that'll work out. out of curiosity, i popped in xeon in the pricewatch search for mobos & the cheapest one that showed up was $289. my rationale was that most ads in pricewatch talk about compatibilty. any type of prebuilt box is pretty much made for what's in it & nothing more (crummy ps's & bios...etc).

Nope. All P2 mobos were slot 1 and all P2/P3 Xeon mobos are slot 2. There really is no way to differenciate from the two unless you buy a motherboard compatible for slot 2 processors. A slot 2 processor will not work in slot 1 and vice-versa.

nope, your best bet would be to see if it supports coppermine celeron in a slocket, then you could get 1.1GHZ at most...
