Celeron 1.1 better for ocing than Celeron 1.2?

I have a Celeron 1.2 running completely stable at 1488 (124 fsb). I can get a Celeron 1.1 for about $60.

I note from the database for the 1.1 a 133 fsb (1463) looks very realistic with the 1.1.

Will performance be substantially improved by raising the fsb from 123 to 133? Or put in another way, is there enough of an increase to justify spending $60? (And it's not feasable now for me to do what I'd prefer - get a P4 and new mb).

Thanks for the assistance.

rayik,

Performance would be *a bit* better, but unless you do it for hobby, it is not worth it... however, if you go and change processor, 1.46 Ghz does not have to be your limit... you could possibly go higher. If you have good cooling, I think that 1.54Ghz (at 140 FSB) is a reasonable expectation, even with no-name memory, but even in this case we are talking about a <10% performance difference w/ your current 1.2.

Hope this helps

Have you done the voltage mod on the ST6? Along with the new BIOS update, that'll get you 1.825v. If you haven't done so, do it. You'll most likely expect a higher overclock. The voltage you are running now (according to your sig) at that speed is quite good.

I really don't see a reason to get the 1.1 unless you are purely into overclocking.

Thanks FTC and Bonka. The 1.2 I have now has been vid pinned for higher voltage. I also had flashed the 8A BIOS.

My problem with the 1.2 is stability at higher fsb. Even 1 higher at 125 fsb (and of course higher voltage), it bounces to the desktop running 3DMark2001SE. It will go up as high as 129 fsb but gets increasing "windows.exe has generated errors messages." It's weird and does't appear to be temp related. To me the CPU I have just doesn't like voltages over 1.50 and seems to get more tempermental the higher the voltage. (If I keep same fsb and raise voltage all I get are more frequently occurring errors.)

I note from your sigs that you both have experience with that Celeron. Thanks for your response. If it was $20 for a the 1.1 I'd probably do it for the fun of it based upon what you say. But for $60, I think I'll put the money towards something else.

rayik,

I am with Bonka in that you should definetly try 1.6Ghz with a bit more voltage (and good cooling). For the sympthoms you describe, it is probably RAM, not the CPU that is holding you back ... but either relaxing RAM timings or going directly to 133 (with 1/4 divisor) witll solve that. If still have problems, try with only 1 stick of ram, timings relaxed.

I say stick with the 1.2 and voltage mod it so you can get it higher, no point in trying to get a 1.1..

I'm pretty sure if you voltage mod the 1.2 you'll be able to reach 133..

Yeah it is a tell tale sign you got a good chip when it does those speeds on default vcore! That is what my 1.2 will do on default and my chip hits around 1650MHz tops!

Switch the RAM and give it a good burn in for a few days. A promising chip like yours shouldn't be gone to waste running at 124fsb when 133 looks very possible. Make sure you don't have any problem devices hooked to the board. That chip has potential.

i say save up more money and go for a P4 or hammer, the performance will increase, but only like 10% at most...
