Sometimes, the devil is in the details.
For at least some, the most important item about the upcoming AM2 platform from AMD is not how well it works or anything like that, but rather that their current cooling solution probably won’t work with it.
While it’s better to know this in early February than early July, if you’ve invested more than a trifle in your cooling system, counting on it to cool a few generations of systems, you may have a big problem.
If you already spent the money, it might be a good idea to start asking those who made the product you bought what they’re going to do about it, if anything, and if the answer is “Nothing,” tell everybody else about it.
If you’re thinking about spending the money, you really ought to find out from whomever what they plan to do about it, and if they haven’t figured it out yet (and this is quite possible, this new design may still be up in the air), maybe you shouldn’t buy until they do figure it out.
It is one thing to obsolete a $30-40 cooler, but if it turns out that more exotic, expensive coolers get frozen out (pun intended), there’s going to be some pretty mad people out there.
