USB 3.1 Specification Brings 10Gb/s Transfer Rates

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that the new specification for the USB 3.1 standard is now complete and ready for development. The new standard builds on current USB 3.0 SuperSpeed standard and adds enhancement to allow for transfer rates of up to 10Gb/s. The new speed is made possible by the use of better, more efficient data encoding. The 3.1 specifications calls for twice the through-put over current USB 3.0 connections while maintaining full backward compatibility with USB 3.0 cables and connectors, as well as USB 2.0 devices.

“The USB 3.1 specification primarily extends existing USB 3.0 protocol and hub operation for speed scaling along with defining the next higher physical layer speed as 10 Gbps,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman.

“In this multi-device world, the USB 3.1 updates will enable end-users to move content across devices quickly, conveniently and without worrying about compatibility,” said Emile Ianni, Corporate Vice President of Platform Solutions Engineering at Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, comprised of Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments, developed the USB 3.0 Specification that was released in November 2008 and is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the specification.
