Yield

Take it for what it’s worth, but I put out a few inquiries to reliable sources as to why we haven’t been seeing high speed TBredBs.

What I’m hearing is that AMD at least has had (if not continuing to have) big yield problems with these chips; let’s just say less than 50%. Some chips are being made and getting out, but resellers are getting these in very limited supply, and resellers are reluctant to even get the chips due to uncertainties in supply.

Please note that this is second-hand information, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of this. The information may also be a bit dated.

I would very much like to hear from other resellers or others in a position to know about this (no attribution) whether they’re hearing the same story or not, and whether or not orders of these CPUs to resellers are being drastically curtailed.

Of course, it would be even better if AMD were to comment on how well their yields have been faring up to now, and if they want to deny that 50% or less figure; we’ll be happy to report it.

Unfortunately, though, I don’t think we can hold our breaths waiting for that.
