Up to now, we’ve assumed that a Hammer 4000+ would be a 2.6GHz chip. Turns out this isn’t the case.
If you look at this roadmap, you shall see that the A64 4000+ will only run at 2.4GHz (though come with a 1Mb cache).
Only the FX55 will be a 2.6GHz CPU.
Actually, this clears a little anamoly in the roadmaps up. There’s been rumors of an A64 4200+ coming out early next year, and it was quite unclear just what kind of chip that would be.
With the specs on the 4000+, it’s likely that the future 4200+ will be a 2.6GHz, 1Mb, 90nm if possible, 130nm if necessary CPU.
The real issue, of course, is AMD not being able to make very fast 90nm chips quite yet. For the moment, that isn’t expected until next May/June.
In other words, whatever’s out there now isn’t likely to get a whole lot better for the next six months.
We’ll probably not see any other 2.6Ghz chip for another eight-nine months until AMD hopes to get until
and the 3200+ for for $228. This is rather less than what the other guys are selling it for.
True, the webpage doesn’t exactly say that they’re 90nm chips, but:
1) there are no such things as 130nm socket 939 3000+ and 3200+s,
2) the indicated voltage is 1.4V, and 130nm 64s use 1.5V2), and
3) the codes on the webpage and the attached picture are the same as those on other 90nm chips.
So I think it’s a pretty safe bet these are 90nm 3000+ and 3200+ chips.
