Fudzilla called this a “pleasant surprise” and indeed it is.
When the 45nm AMD CPUs come out, they will be able to run on both AM2+ and AM3 motherboards because the integrated memory controller will be able to handle both DDR2 and DDR3 memory.
In contrast, the initial Nehalems will need a new mobo and can only use DDR3 memory.
This is good, but what would be even better to find out is if the second-generation of 45nm chips will be able to do the same thing.
This is pretty important because while the initial Nehalems systems will do much better than systems based on these 45nm Denebs, they’re also going to cost a lot more money. Speaking very roughly, people may find themselves six months from now deciding whether they’ll want to pay twice as much for CPU/mobo/RAM as they would for an AMD system. That’s going to make a lot of people at least hesitate.
If people knew that they could pop in a new, improved high-K AMD chip later on, I think a lot more people will forego the extra performance and keep the cash.
