SUMMARY: Nice looking package for HD portability.

The good guys at Tagan were nice enough to send a sample of their external hard drive enclosure IB-390 to test out. This houses a 3.5″ SATA drive with USB, SATA and eSATA output ports.
Key Features

- Aluminum sleeve
- USB and eSATA data transfer
- External power supply, USB, SATA and eSATA cables and drive stand
- Power and HD activity LEDs
- Drive opening tool
The drive back opens with the little tool that looks like a can opener – it’s used to engage two arms which hold the PCB to the sleeve:

Once opened, the SATA HD is screwed to the tray with the PCB:

The back houses the power, eSATA, USB and SATA ports plus a slide On-Off switch:

I tested Tagan’s IB-390 using a Seagate Barracuda 250 GB, 7200 rpm hard drive with the following results:

Love those SATA ports! Nice transfer speed.

Typical USB – great for ubiquity, not so great for large files transfers.
Tagan’s Icy Box IB-390 is a nice package for portable drive enclosures – best with eSATA for large file transfers and OK with USB for portability. The stand holds the drive but not all that securely, a minor quibble.
