To make a long story short, Im thinking about buying an old laptop. Unfortunately I dont know much about intel, so I came here to ask you guys about the laptops processors. One of the laptop models im looking at has a pentium 4 [email protected] ghz, the other has a pentium 3 [email protected] ghz. Now I do know that the new pentium M processors are based heavily on the pentium 3's architecture, and for example a 1.2 ghz pentium M is comparable to a 2.2 ghz pentium 4m with less battery consumption. Now in my case Im wondering if the p3 mobile would compare to, or outperform the pentium 4 mobile. The laptops are actually the exact same model, the only difference being the processor. So if I can save money by buying the p3, by all means I will. I just need some advice.

What would you run on it ? Actually I would go with the P3 cause it is cheaper, it is enough for everything what should be run on a noti. I am not sure abt the power consumption of these cpus, that would be good to know as well.

Not sure on the power consumption. Was planning to surf the web, use it for the basic apps for school, play atleast counter-strike on it, and any other game I could run on the system. The p3m is a tuatlin core if that helps to figure out its power consumption.

Well that P3 will lay the smack down on a Willie P4 up to I think around 1.6 or 1.7. They are also very good on power consumption much better than a P4. I'd go with the P3.

But a 1.7 isnt in the question, how does it compare to a 2.2 ghz? Keep in mind that the 1.2 is the last mobile p3 so upgrading is not a option, while the p4 mobile platform is at 2.6 right now and going strong.

Also keep in mind that upgrading laptop cpu's is not as easy as a desktop, you have to take heat into serious account, most laptops run very hot and are disigned for the particular cpu they have in them and can't handle much more.

A 1.2GHz P3 will handle CS no problem, the bottle neck in the system will be the video card, not cpu power in either lappy. You don't seem to need a powerhouse laptop, save your cash and buy the P3 one, and iif you really wanted to, take the cash you would have saved by going the P3 route and load that thing down with ram. You'll see a bigger performance boost on doubling its ram than the boost in CPU speed.
