1200 dollar build, for 3DSMax & Premiere 1.5

GPU for under $180? I don't want to limit the rendering performance of the X2 3800 too much. This rig will be used for 3D Studio Max, Adobe Premiere 1.5, and various other production software like After Effects. I'm pricing the rig from this site, hardwarezone pricelist, so don't suggest other retailers please. The price conversion is .597 Singapore dollars to the US dollar

find a card which flashes to a quadro or firegl easily....other than that, looks good

You may want to get him a bigger harddrive since he will be working with models and the like (not sure how much space that takes up), or maybe set up raid 1 to protect his work.

I don't think the videocard is that important in rendering, but in case it is, get him something like an x800.

I was thinking the same thing - I think the programs mentioned rely on the CPU to do all the number crunching. You could use a x300 for decent video playback.
