That is an Engineering Sample (it says "Intel Confidential" on the IHS if you look close). It's probably the real deal with an unlocked multiplier and all, but risking winning that auction might mean that Intel could come knocking at your door to come get *THEIR* chip back that hasn't been released officially yet.

I wrote this idiot an email asking for proof that it is what he advertises and he answered by writing me this.

You're correct Jim it's a big scam! Don't bid, it's not for you. You need to buy a retail box CPU and leave this kind of CPU for us techies. No need to see the Die cover, it is what it is and that won't change in a picture. But you are an expert since it hasn't been released yet. I think you wrote this e-mail just to attempt to 1 up me and show you know that these CPU's don't even exist. Well sorry Jim, no 1 up today. You will be blocked from bidding on this auction so stay away!

Why do some people have to act like that. That guy needs to put the crack pipe away. If I got that email and if I was a vindictive, mean sort of guy, I'd be tempted to forward that email to anyone bidding on his auction and then maybe even tipping Intel off... BWAHAHAHA.

Just for him being such a jerk I just shot an email off to my contact at Intel coporate security. His auction shouldn't be open much longer.

Good work TC. Yes, this guy needs a kick in the head. Not only will the auction not be open for much longer but he won't have that processor for much longer, either. The 2.4GHz CPUs are not officially out to the public as far as I know. And I'm positive the 533MHz versions aren't. So I'm sure Intel will be more than happy to get their CPU back.

As previously suggested, I would also forward that e-mail to Ebay, even if only to let them know that someone's selling illegal merchandise on their site.

For those who do not know, ES's are never, ever sold by Intel under any circumstances, they are given to the person who wants one issued to them (there are some extenuating circumstances behind who's able to receive ES's and who isn't). They are made to sign a contract stating they will not attempt to sell this processor. So whoever this guy is, he's in hot water now. I wonder if there could be a criminal charge against this dufus for this.

Don't bid on it - I've already notified Intel and they're going to go after him for the chip.

TC is right... if you were to win it, and he shipped it before Intel got to him, he'd direct Intel to you... and I don't think anyone would want Intel on their tail over an ES... they're very protective of those things.

They're actually pretty cool about it if you bought one not knowing that you aren't allowed to have it unless you're under nda. I bought one last year and they gave me a retail box replacement after I returned the ES.

this cpu is dead as it has a hole on the lower left corner! buyer beware! it could be a fake!
Actually they all have the hole in the IHS. It's to let gasses out as the adhesive cures.

What a butthole. Some people just enjoy being rude and nasty. I hope Intel takes that cpu back....they just might. Quite a few dorks have been nailed selling "contraban" on ebay.

Don't feel bad for him. He should not have been a jerk to start with...but he was! Maybe he's getting paranoid so now he's trying to be nice.
