I remember reading in a thread that running two 256s will result in better memory performance than running two 512s. I'm not talking about system speed or actual memory amounts, just that the boards can work faster with a pair of 256s than with a pair of 512s. More work for the memory controller was the reason, if my lousy memory is working.

For a dual channel board, with 4 dimm slots, which would provide better performance? Two 512 dimms, or 4 256s? Naturally, we're talking Mushkin Level IIs!

4 256's would provide more performance.
It's also what I plan on doing when I get some more money.

4x256 will be "faster" at the same speed over 2x512. But 4x256 will never overclock as high as 2x512 because as you said it strains the MCH a lot more
