200 or 266 FSB

I want to know if any one can tell me if I put a 266 fsb AMD CPU on a 200 FSB motherboard will it boot and run. Can the 266 FSB chip go down to 200 fsb and run well.

I do not see why it would not run. The only thing that would matter is if your motherboard supports the multiplier settings of the cpu. But by running the ddr ram at a 100mhz bus instead of a 133mhz bus, you are underclocking the cpu. God help us all.

I am not sure what you ment by the fsb chip, unless you mean your ram, that too would be underclocked.

You can almost always be assured that things will be backwards compatible. With CPU's and ram its nearly a 100% yes... the only time its not is if your switching types (ie simm - sdram - ddr ram etc).
Otherwise, it will pretty much run at a slower speed since that is what you are doing effectively...

The CPU would run fine, but you wouldn't get the full speed. ie, an XP1500+ in a KT133 mobo would run at 10x100 = 1GHz. Its enough to tide you over until you get a new mobo, but you will not get the most out of the chip.
There are a lot of pretty cheap 266FSB mobos out there - including the ECS K7S5A and many others.

thanks for the replys and the info guys. I kinda thought that the chip would be backward compatible but since this information is for someone else I wanted other input. If it was just for me I would do it and live with the results. However this is someone elses money, .......ssssoooooooooo.......
