Looking for a new monitor, been away from this section for a while. I've been reading about these TN panels, how bad they are, etc. How can you determine whether a panel is an TN panel? Can anyone recommend any good 24 inch non-TNs for around $500?

I don't want no stinkin' TN panels either. Dell seems to have 'em but the specs don't seem to state what technology the panel uses. I look for anything with a slower response time vs the <5ms specs that get touted. Also look for >160-170 degrees horizontal viewing angles. TN panels also go black if you view them from slightly below center vertical angle. That seems to be the definitive characteristic that sets them apart.

Here're some examples of viewing angle differences among the main technologies.

BeHardware has a lot of information on quality non TN LCD panels for color work.

Heres a 22" non TN that supposedly does 1920 x 1200. If so I might bite.

Unless it specifies TN, MVA, PVA, or CVA in the display type, it's difficult to know for sure what is using what. If it's an 8 bit display (can actually display 16 million colors), you'll at least know you're getting a good quality TN LCD at minimum.

Looked at some reviews and found the Samsung 245T to be a pretty good monitor, though rather expensive.

I love all the ports that are on it, and it's not a TN panel. Can anyone vouch for this monitor's quality or suggest an alternate with similar features for less price? A few people are reporting experiencing a buzzing noise and input lag, but there are just as many without any issue.

Looks nice but yes it's expensive. Should be a PVA panel though according to Behardware review.

It's more expensive than the Soyo but will be better quality.

I think that all the ultrasharps are MVA monitors. I got my Soyo at Walmart, but it's sold out currently and it says they are discontinuing it. I found 2 stuck pixels, hopefully the next person who get it won't have problems. I'm hoping they restock it, so I can get a replacement. :burn::bang head

I think I've decided to go with the Dell 2408WFP. Basically the same as the 245T I posted earlier without all the problems, and from what I've seen Dell has the best policy in returning for dead pixels.

Officemax website

I'm looking at getting that Soyo, but I can't find it.

Hmmm... You are right--that monitor no longer exists on their [OM] site. I just checked a couple of weeks ago to see if it was on sale, and they still had it then. In fact, I was just in my local OM last week and they still had several in stock on the floor then. Perhaps I should return and see if there is any major discounting going on for these potentially discontinued monitors.

This monitor was originally an Office Max exclusive, but eventually, other stores like Costco and WalMart started carrying them as well.

It looks like the 26" Soyo is the new OM exclusive (for now) monitor--and I have to say, it looks pretty sweet. I'd like to see one in person. It's $400 now, which isn't too bad for a 26" monitor--but looks like another no-frills deal like the Soyo 24" (no HDMI or HDCP). Aesthetically, it looks better than the Soyo 24", though.

I thought the 26" was TN?

I could be wrong, but I think it's listed as 2ms.

I think I've decided on that one too. Let me know if you find any coupons that work for it, or get a better deal by phone rather than online.

It'll be a hell of a birthday present from me to me.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try to find a coupon/discount for it. I'll go on my hunt later today.

So after further review, I'm staying away from the 2408wfp. The reported 69ms input lag is simply too much for me, being an avid gamer. It actually has the highest input lag of any 24 inch LCD on the market from what I've found. It is very evident in Youtube video reviews. The 2408wfp A01 is supposedly being released in July to fix some of the issues with input lag. Unfortunately that is too late for me.

Suggestions so far are:
Dell 2408WFP (high input lag)
Samsung 245T (high input lag, reported buzzing noises from many users)
Soyo 24"
LG L246WP
LG L245WP (Can't find these LG anywhere..?)

Are there any 24" with good color/viewing angle that don't sacrifice speed?

Currently looking at the NEC LCD2470WNX. It supposedly has the lowest input lag of all 24" LCDs, and I haven't found anyone complaining about it like with the other monitors. This is starting to get really expensive..

Wait until this comes in stock again?

I've passed on it twice already... Not sure if I can again.
eBay has em for ~$250 iirc

That's a refurb for $200. I went to my local OM today and they still had 3 in stock and the display model. They are not on sale currently at $400. I talked to one of the sales people who told me to check back about once a week because when something is no longer available on the website, they wait to sell out of their distribution centers before marking down the leftovers in the store.

If these get down to under $250 again, I may snag a second one.
