Hey everyone I am new here.

I have been posting at other forums for some time now and someone pointed me to the OC forums so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Basically I am considering buying a 2500+ that is locked mainly because it has the 512k L2 cache. Do these still OC well? I would be running in on an NF7-S.

Thanks,
BT.

If you want to do a lot of overclocking, I'd recommend paying a bit extra and getting a Mobile chip. People have been getting amazing overclocks with these chips (see sig), and the NF7-S is an excellent motherboard for overclocking them. You would likely get a very good overclock with air, better if you have better cooling. However, going with just the plain 2500+ (locked) will severly limit your overclocking options.
Welcome to the forums, and good luck!

Okay I was thinking 2400+ M, but those I have asked could never give me a straight answer as to which choice is best: 2400, 2500, or 2600 M.

EDIT: I wouldn't be watercooling. I'm using a DP-102 Limited edition from Aerocool. info I think I can get quite a good overclock...

What other hardware are you considering? And how much do you want to push your overclock?

First of all definitely get the mobile processor, it's a few bucks more, but because it is unlocked and runs cooler at stock speeds, you can push it much further.

But you also have to consider:
Cooling-a third party heat sink will allow you more stability and a higher overclock than the stock heat sink (although I don't think the mobile processor's shipped with one anyways.)
Memory-try for at least 512 MB of RAM, probably at least PC 3200, otherwise your memory will hold you back.

Other things that should be considered include a powerful enough power supply, video card, etc. but the majority of the problems you might come across should be related to heat or memory.

Welcome to the forums, and good luck! Have fun with your first overclock, I know mine was much fun and now has me addicted :) just stay patient!

Well let's see currently I have:
Antec True Blue 480Watt
2400+ I bought in '03
KT4V -> NF7-S by this weekend installed
512mb PC3200 Geil basic?? I know the CAS is 2.5 (may change to 1GB)
Geforce FX 5600 (will keep for a while, 9800pro sometime this year maybe)

BTW: I tried editing my sig and it wouldn't let me something about it being too long but it wasn't more than 20 characters or so.

Can anyone answer his original question though, heh? I just broke :p my old unlocked XP2500 barton gem and I had to RMA it....now AMD will send back a locked XP2500 barton. Can the new XP2500 bartons still overclock 11x200 with reasonable voltage? All I really need is 200mhz FSB.

Can only adjust FSB, which is very limiting. Raising FSB also changes memory, NB, etc. Definitely get the mobile, IMHO.

Which mobile? I need it to run at 200x10 or more.

So probably the 2400+ M or the 2600+ M... Logic would say the 2400+ b/c it is 35w...

The 2400+ is a good one to get you can get any where from 2Ghz - 2.5Ghz on air mabey a little higher. There is some one on OC fourms that has their 2400+ UP to 2.7Ghz water cooled. i have a 2400+'s and love them both are OC to 2.6Ghz and water cooled

2500+ club

Hi;
I also have a locked 2500+. Since my multiplier is 11.5. The best I can get stable is a 11.5 X 180. I am using Corsair XMS 400 and am at 6 3 2 2.
Is their anything else I can adjust, or is this it?
Thanks
Bill

Stock multi on the 2500+ should be 11 drydog, you should be able to get FSB to 200x11 though, MOST can. Are you adjusting vcore at all?

I need 1.9v for 200x11, but its HOT, and ambient in Tucson is hot and humid (monsoons are here, woot!) so my sys doesn't cool well now, hence my 10.5x200 at stock vcore on my unlocked cpu.

Anybody please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about the multiplier though.

How well does a 2500+ locked perform on benckmarks? Just wondering, I also could get one unlocked, good idea?

I just got a new locked 2500+ from Newegg.

It's at 200 x 11 right now at default voltage running Prime95 for 17+ hours now.

I was surprised.
