Upcoming conroe build, I can't decide between 2x 512MB and 1x 1GB. Optimally I would go for 2x 1GB, but I can't afford that right now. I can live with some decreased performance for a few months while I only have a single stick, so is that what I should do?

Would having 4 sticks kill my overclocking ability like it usually does on the X2s?

If its temporary, I guess having one stick would be OK for now. It will still run, but not having dual channel will hurt a little. Usually, four sticks will hurt your overclock.

not on intel it wont,

I would get 2x512 though
Okay, that was my question. I had one person tell me running four sticks would 'break' dual channel.

So, 4x 512MB shouldn't have too much of a negative impact?

no aside from possibly 2T which isnt as abig a hit on intel as it was on NF4 specifically. I see people with 4 1gb sticks at 4-4-4-8 at 400-500mhz all over the place

but if it was me I would get 2x512 then sell them when ready for upgrade to 2x1024

Thanks Rattle. I'll plan on going that route.
