i just got a brand new 3.0c in the mail (newegg retail, sl6wk, pack: 3/16/04, batch: 3405a420, 12 caps) and i was expecting more out of it.

i was running a 2.4c at 2.8 with a 235 fsb at default volts, but this 3.0c is underacheiving.

at default volts it's fine up to about a 215 fsb (runs very cool, 46-48 full).

anything over that with default volts and i get locks and crashes (even though i'm running cool).

at 1.575 volts i can get up to 225 fsb (with a 60 degrees load) but i get crashes with anything higher.

i can get up to about 235 with 1.6 volts, but that runs about 65 degrees full load.

i dont like upping my volts above default levels, but i guess 1.575 is allright. it just makes my temp go up a lot anyways, and i still dont get much out of it.

i thought my troubles mightve been my psu, so i bought a 430 antec truepower to replace my 330 antec truepower and there is no difference.

i was hoping i could get 235 out of this cpu at default vots, but i'm not even close. anyone have any suggestions?

ic7 rev 1.0 (bios 24)
geil platinum 3500 at default latency (4:5)
2x maxtor dmp9 sata raid0
radeon 9800np @ 366/331 (agp voltage at 1.65)
audigy2 zs
2 optical drives
floppy
2 80mm case fans
3 small case fans
zalman CNPS7000A-Cu

You aren't really trying to use the 4:5 memory ratio are you? I'm assuming you mean the 5:4 ratio instead. I'm sure you've done this, but fix the AGP/PCI to 66/33 and disable the last two GAT settings.

yes, it is 5:4 (sorry). i also have my agp/pci fixed to 66/33.

what gat settings are you talking about?

thank you for your help!

edit: nvm. i found those 2 settings. i'm testing it now.

still not working well.

i'm at 225 right now with a 1.575 vcore and full load is 60 degrees (idle is 46, and system is 32).

i can push it to 230 with 1.6, but the temps go up to about 63 and i get errors in prime95 after 12 minutes or so.

my ram is fine, as it is running slower than it was on my 2.4c (which was 235 fsb, 5:4, default volts). the gat settings didnt affect anything either.

anything else to try, or did i just get a bad chip?

your temps are a bit high my 3.0 at 255 runs about 32 c idle

try remounting your heatsink i know you probably tried it but it doesnt hurt to try again your zalman should give u better temps....

ok, ill try it now.

just out of curiousity, when i put the heatsink onto the cpu (with as5) and the holes for the screws dont line up perfectly and i kinda have to glide the heatsink a little to line up the holes, how much does this hurt cooling and conductivity?

thanks for all your help so far, everyone. i really appreciate it.

I always thought my mobo was holding me back but when i get mine to 224 or 225 it does same thing. Did you up your memory voltages? I was able to eek out a 226 after doing that.

I'm running mine at 230fsb, 1.65v core, 4:5 memory ratio, 66.66/33.33. And I use a Thermaltake A1725 Volcano 11 CPU Fan. My temps are 32F Idle and the Highest I have recorded on and allnight Farcry gameing afair is 49F at full load. So your temps are a little High. Stupid question but did you clean off the protective coating that is on there from the factory? I know mine had it on there and I cleaned it off with alcohol.

i took off the hs and cpu, cleaned them with alcohol, reapplied the cpu and hs with as5, and i am getting the same temps and lockup problems.

one thing i noticed though, while cleaning the cpu off, the edges of the heatspreader on the cpu are kind of beveled. like the middle of the heatspreader is flat, but the edges are kind of beveled (i cant find a ruler, but it's the same width as the hight of a cd). the outside is definitely not level with the inside.

it was not like this on my 2.4c where the whole thing was level, and there were no bevels on the outside.

do you think this could be the reason for my heat problems? is this normal, and if not, could i get this RMAed?

it's gotta be a problem with the chip. i went back to default speeds and volts, and now it's running at 61 full. i really think it has to do with the beveled edges on the chip (uneven bevels).

Guys, stop this complaining about temps shown by Abit boards... it's well-known that Abit P4 boards show load CPU temps about and over 60 C (with average air cooling). I've had these temps for years with several mobos and CPUs, and never had a stability issue.

nevertheless, it still gets errors in prime95 and will lock up every once in a while.

yeah, still locking up at default speeds and voltages and running very hot.

im RMAing it. it looks like it's just a bad chip, and hopefully the one i get sent back will be better.

60c is hot for Ocing. I used the Aluminum Zalman HS with the silent fan and it was terrible for cooling the chip. WHat im using now is great providing i have this fast fan on it. I would rather have gotten the SP-94 with the same fan just to get that 2 degree lower extra. My types at full load with the fan near its fastest are shown in my sig. It can goto 43c at its fastest but, nomatter what I also get errors above 231FSB.

likeike: hehe you are a cheater. with a 15 multiplier and 230 FSB your speed in your sig should say 3.450ghz.

wow, i didnt know people were having problems like this with the 3.0c. hopefully the new chip i get back from newegg will work out better.

Really?

hi everyone! im new on the OC forums!! :D But you'll see me often now!

I got a 3.0C and i can increase it to 226 mHz with stock HFS. (3,39G) my temp. is REALLY low and i dunno why.. if i chek with the corecenter of MSI at startup im at same temp as my case so ~34°C but after a while my cpu temp go down to 27°C at idle. At full load Temp increase to ~51°C. In my bios my idle temp is the same as my case about.. 34°. i dunno why in windows the temp go that cool... i also got a fan with a tube in front of my cpu fan so the cool ambiant air is directly on my cpu. at 230 fsb my cpu get alot of error and trouble so its why i stay at 226 but i wait for the SP-94 and the NB-1C of thermalright to increase my cpu voltage.

i think i got a great 3.0C i dont remember all that info on the chip.. ill chek it when ill change my HFS.. i also put AS5... not the crappy sticker ...

Frog!

i recon it is a bad chip but saying that i dont think intel warenty cover o/cing and neither does new egg but still good luck and report back please?

Phil

p.s. the cpu may have had a severe case of S.N.D.S??? only a thought maybe im barking up wrong tree lol
