dang. Im waiting for my new mobo b4 i really started to look into cooling, so i installed MBM. After first firing it up, temps were 50*C core at IDLE atleast full load would get above 60*C!(intel says max is 72)! and 40*C case!! So i cleaned my heatsink, cleaned the fan took all the dust out, installed 2 80mm fans (1 in, 1 out) i had lying around and now its down to 27-8*C core idle and 25*C case idle that's more than 20*C cooler! I still have to see full load :)

Looks to me like your heatsink had no thermal compound in between or barely no contact. You wouldn't believe the big chunks of dust when I cleaned out my case (Literally).

Getting the dust out is a good thing (as Martha Stewart would say), but the biggest change was probably from the case fans, IMO.

I'd be willing to bet the only air movement before the changes was from the power supply fan.

Yodums, those big chunks of dust are ghost turds. It's an industry term.

hmmm I never knew dust did that much. Wow! How much do filters slow down air? Do you have to clean filters much?

Filters do cut down your CFM somewhat. And I give mine a good cleaning about once a week. But they do make a big difference. I have enough fans that the cut in CFM isn't that big a deal. And they do help out a lot.

My 2¢

Well for one filters keep mad dust away. You clean them when they have too much dust on them.

did you guys buy your filters or did you just make yours with some kind of foam thing (like the stuff that comes with your motherboard when you buy it.)

I bought all the original setups, but as the filter foam wears out, I replace it with air conditioner filter material.

where do you get airconditioner filter? How thick is it? I think I will just tape some on my fan ... will that work okay?

I can imagine that the only thing the dust was doing was heating up and restricting air flow. When i took off my CPU fan, there was a pile in an O that was about 2cm high.. I was like, GODDAMN!
My teach. in my comp class just tossed a bunch of broken and ****ty computers they weren't using, so i just smuggled the fans out of the PSU's, so they aren't too great. I did however get an abundent supply of cables of every kind :)

i run my comp. with the sides off and only 2 case fans and ive ionly found a few specks of dust in there. this is prolly because my comnputer isnt on carpet, its on a concrete floor with nothing around it

Dust sucks, I try to clean mine every other week. I can't figure why my apartment is so dusty.

I always use the Aluminum Mesh filters... Works GREAT, doesn't wear out, easy to clean and doesn't reduce airflow hardly at all, not to mention it looks pretty cool... Check here. That's not the ONLY place that has them, but I've ordered from 2CoolTek before and had good luck...
peace

I second the use of wire mesh!

I used normal filter foam, but it really reduced airflow. Case temp was nearly 10C above ambient. After using wire mesh it's about 2-3C above. But I'd use some wire mesh available from your local hardware shop. The one I'm using, was intended for strenghtening some compund used for repairing the bodywork on cars. Look around, thats all.

Cleaning? A vacumecleaner towards the mesh - flying dust - 10 seconds later all cleaned!
