Check out my profile for full PC specs, but I'm running a 1.4 Thunderbird OC'ed to 1600. I have a 9600XT stock speeds.

My scores are in the mid 10k range for 3DMark2001.

I am very disapointed. My friend with a 4200Ti OC'ed is getting high 11k scores! He is running an Athlon XP 2200.

Does the processor really make that much of a difference in 3DMark 2001? I know my image quality is way better than his, but I want to get the bragging rights that come with a higher score.

I'm looking at getting a Barton 2800+. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

What do you think? Are these scores consistent for my system?
What do you think I'll get with the Barton?

Like SewerBeing said, the CPU/FSB/memory make a very BIG difference with 3dmark01. So the Barton should make a nice improvement, especially if you overclock it.

Can you overclock your T'bird any higher? Or overclock your video card any higher? You could also set all of your video card settings to max performance instead of quality.

When I had my t-bird at 1659mhz, with my Radeon 7200 I was getting 4695. My FSB was at like 220mhz, and GPU was overclocked. Upgrading from my t-bird to a 2100+ clock at 2328mhz I was getting 4924 (FSB was only at 210mhz).

Overclocking your XT will help ALOT. Also, disabling most of the junk in windows XP helps alot also (if you have XP). And I think considering you have a 9600XT the points gained by upgrading your CPU will be a percentage higher than what I saw. But what gains by far the most points is overclocking your GPU. So get on it!

Thanks for the tips guys, I have overclocked my Vid card but the results were less than spectacular I still couldn't break into 11k. So i clocked it back down. I'm going to get a custom copper heatsink for the GPU and custom oversized Ramsinks as well.
Maybe I can get a better OC out of it after that.

When your processor is such a heavy bottleneck, overclocking the video card won't help too much. I'd definitely spring for the Barton.
