So... I didnt want to thread jack Adak's "Meet tanker" for questions on my future 4p...

This model supports half the ram (256GB vs 512) but the sockets are positioned different which could pose a problem for some heatsinks:
http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron6000/SR56x0/H8QGL-iF.cfm

Price on this board is in the $600's vs $700+ for the 512GB version (H8QGi-f)

I almost pulled the triger just now on the standard Supermicro 4p everyone is rocking... (Since my funds are coming in from stuff i am selling, why not start with the MoBo since I gotta mod/fit it to my case just right...). My main question is, would the Noctuas still fit if I removed one or two of the fans from the sockets that are close together? I could just go with the 34 dollar one's from the egg too... or are those an issue too?

I'm pretty sure somebody here is using that board, but I can't recall who. I remember asking if anybody knew of any issues in that huge 4P thread I started. Somebody posted he was using it without issue - the only potential problem being with large heatsinks. I can't remember what he was using though. It's hard to guage looking at the picture, but you might be able to have one fan on one of the noctuas (in between those sockets) such that it's pulling from one heatsink and pushing into the other - so essentially you'd have three fans to those two sockets all moving air the same direction.

I believe so. Put all the Noctua's so they blow the hot air upward to the top of the case (be sure your case is well vented at or near the top, of course).

The distance from the very center of the Noctua's I used, to the edge of it, is only 1 and 7/16".

Put one fan on the very bottom of the lower Noctua tower of fins, and the other fan could be on the top edge of the higher Noctua tower. (One fan pushing air, and the other one pulling air.)

The only problem I see is that the air going into the upper tower, being so close to the lower tower, will be slightly warmer than would be the case with my board. But I don't think it's enough to be a problem. Especially, since that is on the air intake side of most computer cases. Cool air will be swept right into that stack of fins.

That is the board I intend to use if and when I build a second 4P board, to save money on RAM.

Good to know... I wasnt looking at it correctly... I though the way the heat sinks would sit, would blow out the back. Ventilation from the top shouldnt be an issue, since my wife kicked me out of my office to make way for the expansion of kid toys, I made sure when I set my comp back up, it would be completely "out" on its own, and not part of the desk sticking over it.

Man, that stinks... Now the H8QGIF is avalible, instock, at SuperBiiz, but "special order" and out of stock for the H8QGL-iF everywhere else...

I believe it's VERY important that the 4P boards, vent very well out of the top of the case. First, because that's the natural movement of hot air -- up! And second, because when installed (pointing toward the back of the case), the fans will not line up with the rear air exhaust fan on the case - and the rear exhaust fan(s), will not balance the 4 heatsink fans output.

When I was shopping for Tanker, Newegg always had the cpu's I wanted. THE day that I was ready to order, Newegg was out of the 6272 cpu's! Had to order them from Superbiiz (saved a bit of money that way, though).

I am thinking of going to the bay for 4 6174 MC's... gonna pm a price offer to one of those top rated sellers that have multiple in stock for buying 4 of em... I just hope I get what I pay for... as long as they work, I dont care if it was used, new, or new other... They just better all be the same type.

That's what I would do, although it is a bit nerve racking.

Although I would get as close to $400 as possible, even at $450, they are pretty good deal and cheaper than what I paid for. I was able to get the guy selling for $445 down to only $440 for two. They might give a slightly better deal with 4.

On that mobo:

First, I can't find anyone selling just one - would you settle for a package of 10 of them for ~ $6,400?

Second, I see it's quad channel memory, so I'm wondering if you save anything in RAM, by getting it, versus Tanker's 4P board. Tanker's model will have half it's slots empty, (to save on the cost of RAM and power), but looks like it will use the same amount of RAM as this model mobo, for good performance.

This mobo has a better price, but you have to find someone who has it!

Norcalsteve, I've got the H8QGL-iF Super Micro that TC linked. I'm running four Hyper 212+ heatsinks with home-fabricated mounting bars (easy mod). Except for the the sockets spacing on that board, I've found nothing else to complain about. (see signature, No. 4) Now that I've got the 212s mounted and cooling the CPUs superbly, really, I've got nothing to complain about.

Pictures here of the system.

I can post the pics here as well, but I didn't want to steal the focus from this thread.

Update:
1) Steve, I believe all the SM G34 4P boards are 4-channel. To engage 4-channel, you would need to populate 4 DIMMs for each socket, but no more. Someone please check me if my facts are off.
2) Twice already, Newegg has had the Hyper 212+s on special for $20. I was fortunate that one of those specials ran right when I was completing my 4P build. It wouldn't surprise me if they ran a special again. Musky's guide is here for retention bar trick.

Crap, this is giving me a strong urge to build another one. What do you guys think? Should I risk my my 27-year marriage over more Folder power? :sly:

Sweet, thanks much, I'll look into those 212's.

I just "slept on it" and pulled the trigger on the MoBo, H8QGL-iF... 7-20 days from vendor though. But I still am waiting on a few more bucks anyways :p

Funny... that was the exact one I had on watch... I'll see what I can get from him.
Anyone up for a group buy? I've been watching that one too. Maybe he'd do ~ $400 if we bought 8 or more. I already have two and an h8qgi-f on the way, but I will probably sell my remaining sr2s and build at least one more 4p over the next two months. I think the h8qgli-f is worth a shot. Servers direct had it in stock two weeks ago, but I held out for the h8qgi-f.
