Was just wondering if the 52x liteons are safe to use. My cousin had one year or so ago, and it shattered one of his cds. I was going to get a 48x but all newegg and zipzoomfly carry now are 52x.

Thanks

onizuka the shattering of the cd is because the cd-rom spins so fast the G-froce caused fromt he fast spinnign warps the cd and in-turn shatters the cd.

usually only cd's that are already slightly dmaged cracked somewhere shatter. There is usually never a case in which a brand new good condition cd has ever shatters unless using a cd-rom spinning at 64x which not a single cd can handle because the g-force is too much for it.

Here's an article on it

thanks for the link and info! Now I feel better bout going ahead and ordering it =)

Even though it can burn at 52x, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to burn at 52x. If your worried, bump it down a few notches.

i have the 52x, and so far have thrown 40x and 48x media at it, and it has always successfuly burned them at 52x. It didnt even bump the speed down. This drive is fast, cheap. If only it was as sexy as a tdk....

K thanks, and yes the TDK are very sexy lol. Kinda sad to see mine go =(

You are all wrong. Liteon will not only shatter your CDs, but also will crack your CD cases. It's dangous.

1. what proof do you have
2. Do you only mean LIteon drives, or all drives that spin at over 48x

ALSO how can a CD-ROM drive physicaly shatter a CD case?

I do not mean to be mean with these questions, I am just a little curious and possibly a little worried about my 52x burner.....:D

Lite on will not only cause your CDs to explode and cases to break, it will also rack up huge gambling debts and steal your girlfriend. A friend of mine's Lite on caused a plane to crash into his house, and he returned it for one that ended up murdering his prize collection of exotic fish.

I suggest you get a Pioneer or TDK, unless you're prepared to press charges against your hardware.

I've had a CD kill itself, it was a high-quality CD but I had been using it for a long time, so it was sorta coming really.....

Still got the pieces, I might take pics someday :)

My liteons have sent Cd's into hover mode but never broken a cd, HOVER MODE IS COOL!!!!!!. Now i know you are saying "MADCOW WHAT IS THIS HOVER MODE YOU SPEAK OF?" And I will tell you so all sit around the fire so i can tell the story of the magic flying CD's.
ONE DAY i sanded my bf1942 cds to try and get them to work, they were scratched to hell and the patented madcow cd fixing DOESNT WORk. So i tried to get teh cds to work and my comp locked up in the middle of the install so i tried to ctrl alt delete but that didnt work so i decided to GO IN. I armed myself with a paperclip and emergency opened the drive. The cd was spinning so fast that it took off into the sky and flew around then hit my roof and landed on the top of my desk, COOLEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The CD didnt break but it flew.

HAHAHAH. Awsome! Also have a liteon 52x burner, also burn 48x media at 52x, also never had a problem. The only thing is that it's pretty damn loud at full speed. My DVD-ROM drive is supposed to read at 52x (CDs), and it's nowhere near as loud.

I often copy DVDs to DivX and burn them onto CDs. I usually split a movie to two discs. So later, when I'm watching them, I put one in my CDRW and one in my DVD-ROM. During the first half of the movie, the CDRW drive is spinning and is audible even with the speakers pretty loud and me sitting on my couth across the room. You get used to it, but during the second half, when the DVD-ROM is reading the disc, it's so quiet. Kind of like when a washing machine or fridge shuts off; you don't realise how loud it is until it's gone.

they dont shatter easily

I have two seperate things to add to this, one i have a 52 speed liteon and have had no shattering much less any complaints, also the show Myth Busters which is on the discovery channel decided to test this out as well, they concluded that unless the CD was really damaged it was not going to shatter at any speeds present today, in the end they modified a pneumatic impact wrench (i think) and said it was equivalent to like a 300 speed drive and then they started shattering CDs it was pretty cool, so in short lite ons are fine and wont mess anything up and if they did so would all 52 speed drives because how they spin isnt really any different between each different company and model
