my mom got an account..so I use that one now..and it drops me..its very weird..but I tried something tonight..while I was sleeping I only had kazaa on..and nothing with AIM at all..and I'm still online in the morning.. :)

In all honosty, I buy hardware modems now. I just got one from newegg.com for about $40 (Internal). It's well worth it. At my old place, the software modem would get about 46 and my server would show about 30% usage. I got a hardware modem and it connected at 52 nearly all the time and my server only had 7% CPU usage. Big difference.

I lost my equipment in a fire. So now I'm in a new place and I borrowed a software modem. The new place has crappy phone lines. The software modem would take about 15-20 min to connect and then only get 34 kbps. I got my hardware modem from newegg and it connects on about the 3rd try and I get about 40 kbps. Again a big difference.

For less than $50 for a hardware modem, I'll buy one for as long as I need a modem.

P.S. I should be able to get broadband at the new place in a couple of months and then it's 'goodbye dialup'.

hmm..last night when I left my computer downloading (which when I wake up it usually isn't able to receive at all, but the "connection" is still established.. I woke up to my computer still downloading..and I did ONE thing different..I didn't have Trillian Pro open..I had AIM..

Does anyone here use Trillian Pro?

Are the two places where it works/doesn't work very far apart? It occured to me, it might be due to phoning into different modem pools, where one lot might be rockwell or something and the other lot might be lucent or something and have different ideas about the way they implement V90, V92, X2 or whatever. I had heard something about USR X2 modems not liking to talk to other X2 modems. So it could possibly be solved or alleviated, by trying to force a different connect protocol, if for example you're using V92, try V90 or X2.

Just an idea. Could also be issues with phone line quality between the two locations.

I have good quality phone lines in both houses..and no one calls this house..I think that my modem drivers do not like the software that I am using..I have higher probability of crashing if I have trillian open, then aim, then kazaa, the the least chance is just being connected...

So time for a new modem.. :)
