finally decided to flash my 5900 to a 5950 since i got the money for a 6800 gt now, just waiting to find an albatron in stock. and i got to say wow i'm glad i did, nothing but good happened.

my highest oc before was 490/1ghz with minor artifacts {little white dots}
highest 3dmark was 17334

new oc is 540/1025 {same little white dots}
everyday gaming before was at 475/975 no visual artifacts.

new high 3dmark 18418 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7979870
now so far gaming at 500/990 no visual artifacts.

the best thing i can say about it is the iq and framerate in farcry is way better than before with same drivers and game settings. hard to explain but places where i know it stutters don't stutter at all now and have higher frames to boot, plus the lighting looks way better.

the hardest to explain though is the temp. i kinda figured it might go up since everyone figured the 5950 bios had higher voltages=higher temps. but before my temps were 34-36/41-43 depending on ambient temp.
now it's at 31-33/37-39.

all in all i gotta say i'm happy with the results. :thup:

make sure you can oc to 5950 speeds first. also stock cooling may not be enough. i replaced mine with an athlon xp sink with a copper core and stuck a ttsf2 on it

i'm now convinced to flash my se to an 5950u
thanks

Be advised the SE will not flash to an Ultra. The SE has slower ram. Flashing it will only kill it.

Congrats copernicus :thup: I flashed my BFG FX5900XTOC to a 5950 Ultra a while back. Running 500/1Ghz 24/7 artifact free. last bench was 19k in 3D01 and 6800 in 3D03.

My epv is at 505/960 WITH stock cooling. Except for a 92mm fan blowing on the top of the card (held up with string and a cheesy bracket) and a vantec spectrem blowing from below the card. the 92mm fan and spectrum together was $25. Yeah its strange, I got considerably lower temps (as with my dad who also has the epv) and I don't understand it. But I got great results flashing my bios.

wait, with those frequencies, you have 6600 3dmarks? thats nice man :beer: Then again, you did replace the heatsink. BTW, did you put any as5 on yours? I was thinking about it but I don't know how hard it would be to get the stock heatsink off and then back on again. theres a guy on the forums called larva, who got his epv to 520/995 or something. YIKES! For some reason my ram on my epv doesn't like to get much higher than the stock memory settings on the 5950u... Fine by me, I got my core 100mhz higher :attn:

Argh, those XT's and their potential.... 500/1ghz is massive. I'm surprised that a lot of the XT's have 2.2ns memory on them (or possibly 2.4?) The albatron 5900epv has some odd 2.5ns memories on them...

Yay!!! Finally "found" a Modded BIOS for my XFX 5900XT!!!!!

I'm now running 475/950 5950U stock frequencies!!!! Games play sweet.

It won't go to any higher frequencies and 3Dmark 2003 has artifacts..... needs better cooling for sure.

.......but what else do you want from a 128mb 5950Ultra that cost less than £160????

Conclusion: Don't delay Flash Today!!

if you got artifacts showing your mem might be clocked to high with the flash. if you got no ram sinks better think about getting some. do you notice any little white or blue dot's while gaming? if you run the mem to high and hot for to long it will kill your card. so be careful

Yeah I had my BFG 5900 flashed to a 5950U (before I killed it) and I could run 12x10/Highest Quality in FarCry, and it never lagged or stuttered.

Nah.... the ramsinks are pretty cool to the touch already ;)

I really could do with a good GPU cooler for it though. Stock isn't all that effective.

...but that's another thread

Quick ?: If I could find a compatible bios for a leadtek a350 FX5900U, would flashing it to 5950 have any impact on the vivo functions? j/w, the card is still in the mail.

I found a bios for the a380 and a modded 5950 bios. I'll take a look at the a380 model and see if it has vivo, and if it does, then it should work with the 5900u, i hope.

edit:
the a380 has vivo, so I guess once I get the card i'll see if it can oc that far, then flash it with the a380 bios.

okay, i got the 5950u rev1 and rev2 bioses. I just got the card and it won't go above 540/970. Should I go ahead and flash it? Thanks for the link and the help.

Flashing to a 5950u will ALWAYS lower your temps on your video card. The reason why is because the 5950u bios makes the fan spin faster =)

i wasn't using the stock cooling, so this can't be the case.
i replaced it with an athlon xp sink with a copper core, and put a ttsf2 on it, which was powered by the ps not the card.

Well, I tried with those BIOSes, but nvflash is giving me a problem about the fact that the device ID doesn't match (0333 is 5950, 0330 is 5900). I figured out i can change the device id in x-bios, but if I do and then flash the card, will it work, or will I have to use my old gf2 pci and fix it after reboot?

I decided to not flash until i've learned a bit more. Obviously, my card cant run at memory speeds this high--is there anyways i can get my memory clocks higher?
