800 MHz FSB HT PIV in an 845PE board...

Not officially supported. Some companies advertised that there's will do it, but it's pushing the chipset hard just to run at the default speed of the cpu.

Hello skatman:),
Iam not quite sure that i fully understand your question. Are you saying that will your motherboard take the p4 800mhz fsb series? If so I'am quite sure it will. According to Intel, that chipset will take any P4 with Hyperthreaded technology and 800fsb.
This link should help you out, http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/845pe/

Hope my post has helped you.:)

That link shows that the 845PE officially supports 533 and 400 fsb procs, and HT 533 procs, of which the only one is the 3.06. The 800fsb procs are not "officially" supported on the 845PE although some mobo mfrs "unofficially" support them through bus speed overclocking. One example is the Asus P4PE series, and also the Abit BH7.

I agree with TC, why push the limits of the chipset to run at default speeds? You're better off with an i865 series board if you're looking to go lower cost.

I guess my question is this: I have an Intel mobo (845PETB2). I have a 2.4G/ 533 PIV in it right now. I want to go HT. Would a 2.4G/ 800 PIV work in it? Would the 800MHz PIV step down and just run at 533MHz FSB?

I don't know for sure whether it would work or not. My question is why would you even consider doing it in the first place? Even if it did automatically run at 533 bus (133 FSB), the 2.4C has a locked 12X multiplier and the FSB on an Intel brand mobo can't be changed, so you would be stuck with a CPU clock speed of 1.6 gig. Yuck! That's half the speed you could get from a cheap overclockable i865 chipset mobo.

Batboy,
the reason I want it is HT. For the types of things that I do, HT will help a bunch.
I'm not interested in OCing this machine.
If I was to go with 865 chipset board, I would have to get:

PIV 2.4/800 HT: ~$170
Intel 865 board: ~$140
2 sticks of DDR400 512MB (because if I might as well go synchronous): ~240

Suddenly this is a MAJOR upgrade.

I was thinking that the proc. will adjust the multi to compensate, but I guess not... hmmm.
Thanks Batboy.

Intel multipliers are firmly locked. Well, if you get the Abit IS7-E and 2X512 of Kingston HyperX PC3000, that will save you about $100 from your total if ordered from newegg, com. The other option is the 3.06 CPU since it's the only 533 bus CPU with hyperthreading, but they ain't cheap. It would be better to get the 2.4C and a mobo that supports it. Don't you already have RAM? If so, what do you have?

Highly unlikely that an Intel 845 board will support an 800fsb P4. If you can't afford to upgrade then you'll have to go with the 3.06.

Most abit and asus 845PE boards will do 200MHz bus speed. Keep in mind this is overclocked, and it leaves little headroom for overclocking the CPU. If you have a 845pe and you wanna get a 800MHz bus speed CPU go for it.. just keep in mind what I said, and make sure it's either a Asus or Abit... If you don't have the board already, DON'T buy it.. get a 865PE instead..

Batboy,
I'm currently running 512MB of PC2700 Corsair XMS.

Thanks everybody for you suggestions.

If you really want a Intel MOBO retail never been used I have one from the Intel retail Edge program. It does not allow OC'n but it has alot of great features like giga lan and ICH5. i am not sure if it has raid but it may.
