Well first of all, have you completely removed your old driver from the system. And the default VGA driver is built into Windows don't worry. And what driver version are you trying to install?

Since you've a dual-boot, which OS are you installing?. And did you set the display to VGA after uninstalling the driver? (i.e. you didn't let the OS install anything).

In WinXP, try going to the Device Manager. there select the card (the unknown device), click properties, if there should be a Reinstall Driver button, hit it, and follow the on screen directions, like set the dir where the drivers are located. and press next. it should install.
In Me remove all the previous drivers, if u had ATI card do a search for ATI*.* in ur windows dir delete all the file, if u had a nvidia there is such thing as detonatordestroyer, u can find it in www.guru3d.com under downloads, should get rid of all the files that were previously installed...
Then restart the computer, windows will detect new hardware and set it as Standart VGA, will prompt to restart, restart it and then install the drivers
