not a bad deal... isn't the 8600gt the same as the 7600gt (other than dx10 support)?

Performance-wise practically yes (the 8600GT has a slight leg-up on the 7600GT, but not enough to really notice), though it's obviously a totally different core...

Similar, but not the same, for one the 8600 has 32 pipelines vs 12 on the 7600

The biggest difference seems to be that ppl oc the 8600 to nearly 2gig.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/132

people claim nearly 7900 performance out of the 8600, and oc em like mad. I still havent found something to compare the power draw though, I want to pull my powerhungry 7900 GT CO OC out of the media puter I'm using, but just dont have the time to experiment :(

i thought the 8600gts was the one that performed like a 7900gt, not the 8600gt...

I think the 8600s are a waste.

-Its a weak card compared to the 8800s.
-DX10? Okay, but there arent any full fledged DX10 games out yet is there?
-By time they do come out...your game will look like Direct X 8 anyway because it will need a faster card to get good visuals out of it.

So thats just my take on it.

It is a cheap card though, I'll give it that at this price.

To each his own. =)

Hardly, I will be using a similar card (and would have used that one) in my HTPC, its cheap, its fairly high-end and it does high-def.

The 8600GT is also $70 where as the 8800 is $250. Sorry if everyone can't afford a graphics card that cost more than some peoples entire system.

I think Honda Civics are a waste. If you can't afford a Ferrari you should just be walking.

I'm sorry, but LilBuddy is completely right here (with his sarcasm). Not everyone has the money to shell out $250-300 for one video card. Hell, I held out from replacing my X1800XT 512mb with an 8800 card and bought myself a second Xbox 360 instead (much better investment except that M$ is the worst manufacturer EVER for a high-end console).

if you're insisting on buying a $300 card every 6 months, then of course it doesnt make sense. while you say not everyone has money to blow, looking around here says that plenty still do. g0dm@n likes to collect toys himself =)

my comments were geared toward the 8600 for gaming anyway by the way.

So you are saying if I have $70 to buy a video card to game with I should just save my money and not game? I'm using a Radeon X200 right now so 8600GT would be quite and upgrade for me.

if you game and want or need an upgrade, by all means upgrade to whatever graphics card you can with the budget you've got. live for today, not for tomorrow :D
