9700 NP - how good of a card is it?

Considering going for a cheap upgrade with the 9700 NP and overclocking it to at least 9700 Pro speeds.

You mean just do a BIOS flash into a 9700 Pro or something?

The 9700 is a pretty good card. Most will OC to at least pro speeds IIRC, which is very similar to the 9800np at stock. The R350 (9800) is ~10% faster than a R300 (9700) at the same clock speeds, so you may have to OC it a bit more to be equal, but it should be within the capability of the card to reach 9800 or even possibly 9800pro performance by OCing.

I've had a 9700pro for about a year now and its been great. I would just buy a 9800 np instead and just mod it into a 9800XT. Not sure how much a 9700np is but a decent 9800pro w/ R360 core is around 206. The MSI RX9800pro has a 360 core and a great heatsink. Just a thought.

You can get a refurb 9700pro on newegg for $137 which is a heck of a deal.
