Dunno if this is a common question but ive browsed for it here for awhile, need some help. I have XP pro upgrade from 98se. Is it possible to make a NTFS file system, or do i have to have FAT 32 and how? This is on my second computer, i have just reformated and im sitting at the command line. Thanks in advance.

Assuming you start the install from a formatted HDD and have a full version of 98SE, start from booting to CD and when prompted for the MS OS, insert the 98SE CD into the drive(I haven't tried this personally, but have heard it works). It should detect it as a valid upgrade and allow a full install with NTFS formatting. The other method is to convert the drive following install, but don't do this. It will result in 512byte clusters and most likely greatly reduce the speed and efficiency of the drive.

Hmm. that kind of confuses things.... i have 98se FULL, and XP pro upgrade. When i did it the first time (this happens to be the second) i was operating 98se and just stuck the XP pro upgrade in and it installed using GUI fine, but the file system remaind as FAT32. Thinking that i skipped a step or somthing i uninstalled, reformated, stuck my 98se boot in and now im at my C: promt with CDROM support.

I was wondering how i FDISK into NTFS? or should the XP pro upgrade do this automaticly afteri install 98se fully? it didnt do it the first time i tried. But how could i FDISK to NTFS with only 98se?

Switching to NTFS is easy in Win XP and in Win 2k. The problem lies if you want to switch back you will have to reformat. There are a few ways to do this. One is the CONVERT command from the command line. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307881

Another way is to go to Start>>programs>>Administrative Tools>>Computer Management>>Disk Management. You can do it from disk management. You have to turn on the Administrative tools so they show up in the start menu though. Just remember when you switch to NTFS you can not switch back. Good luck.

there are some 3rd party programs that alow you to convert fat 32 to ntfs, and
ntfs back to fat 32 if you want. the bigestt name ive heard of so far is partition magic by power quest

I did not know that one could go from NTFS to FAT32 with out formating the drive... even windows says so (During installation). Is this software free or do we got to pay?;)

using windows you cant go back without formating. but this software don't care.

the software is not free infact you might call it expensive at $80 us dollars) but its worth it for the features it has.

It alows you to resize and move your partitions around without loosing your data.

if you look hard enough you can find it online, But I won't post links.
