I have an old 5400rpm Thermaltake Chrome Orb that was meant to be used only for Athlons up to 1Ghz.

Can I use this cooler on an Athlon XP? I mean, most good coolers are 5000rpm or higher. But is it too risky to use one specified for lower clock speeds?

Also, I intend on overclocking the XP 1700+ to 2.0Ghz.

I'm guessing I'll have to get a new cooler though. But is there any chance my old one would work?

Are you referring to the Crystal orb. If you are thats a chipset cooler. I would suggest you get a better HS. There are many good choices out there some under 20 bucks. spend the money and get a good contender.

Thanks.

Excelsior, I see you have your 1700+ overclocked to 2.4Ghz. How long do you think it will take your processor to fail? Overclocked that high do you think it could last a couple years?

Every three months!!?!!?! Must be nice. My wife wouldn't take to that very well, unless I managed to kill the chip that often.... :D

To get back on topic, get the best heatsink you can afford. The cooler the chip stays, the better your oc (usually), the longer your chip will last, and the better peace of mind you'll have. Plus, you wont have that 5400 RPM whine to deal with all the time. I've switched both my rigs over to heatsinks with 80 mm fans recently and my hearing's never been better :D .

Gotta keep up with the trends. Head reviewer for the website in my profile ;)

If you change it every 3 months, I call DIBS on your 1700 now when you decide to sell it here.

LOL (Seriously though)

So xX~EXCELSIOR~Xx, how are you getting that high? I can only get mine to 1.7ghz (200x8.5). If i go to x9 then it wont boot, my voltage is maxed out at 1.8, what voltage are you using? I would like to get mine to at least 2ghz.....
