i tried to follow the same flow direction for both cards. is that not correct?

No, he means that you can flip the barbs that that connect the two cards so you just have a short piece of line that goes strait from one card to the other. See the block-off nuts, flip two of the barbs, one on each card and both on the same side (left or right, it doesn't matter if the flow is the opposite direction through the two blocks), and make the connection with a strait piece of tube thats about an inch long.
