Hey guys, I'm sorry if my answer lies within these forums already, but the search feature doesn't seem to work for me.

I just got a p4 3.2c and an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe. I also have a nice watercooling system, so I'd like to overclock my cpu. Although I have never oc'ed before I think I am ready to start, I read these forums quite often at work, so I am learning quite a bit. My mobo says it supports up to ddr400 ram, now if I overclock I would be able to run memory faster than ddr400 correct? If I oc my cpu to 3.6 or maybe 3.8 if I can, what speed of memory would I want to get? There must be some formula to calculate this. If you could give me some suggestions, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to have a gig of dual channel, and a quality brand. I'm willing to dish out about 350 on my memory, possibly a little more. Thanks in advance for any help.

im pretty green to ocing as well, so correct me if im wrong, but this is what i gather...

the process goes something like:
1) figure out ~about~ how high your fsb is going to be overclocked.
say, you did some research on your cpu, and mb, and expect to overclock to 250ish fsb

2) then you figure out what ratio you are trying to hit (ie. 1:1, 5:4)
if 1:1, you want ddr that can run at 250MHZ (250:250=1:1) at best timings possible.
if 5:4, you want ddr that can run at 200MHZ (250:200=5:4) at best timings possible.

3)then you research what ram can hit those speeds and at what timings.

and as far as i know $350 will buy 1GB of anything on the market...

the ocz eb pc3700 would be a good fit for u..

Yup, OCZ 3700 hits DDR500 which would allow you to hit 250FSBx16 for a max of 4.0Ghz 1:1 (not very likely). There also happens to be some good OCZ 3700 gold for sale in the forums, lol, :p

Or another option is some good 3200 ram, run it 5:4 ratio, the advantage of this is that good stuff like Corsair 3200XL can run 2-2-2-5 timings. So there are two options.

i hear the eb's are nice and also hear the Hyperam from www.komusa is nice too. click on the hyperam link on the side. they have a 512x2 ddr500 for $240 or the ddr533 for $260. make sure at the bottom you select Adata brand, if you buy from them. I have read around the forums that the adata stuff has been hitting ddr600 speeds.

Ok so correct me if I am wrong..
If I get pc3700 (DDR466) and I oc my cpu from 3.2 to 3.6 my fsb would be at 225 and my memory would be running faster than my fsb?

Would I want underclock my ram to DDR450 (can I do that?) so that it would be synchronous with my fsb? According to one of the memory stickies, memory running synchronously with your cpu provides best performance.

Also, I can't decide between the OCZ Ehanced bandwith and the Ehanced Latency versions. Enhanced latency seems more appealing to me since the bandwith should be 3.7gb/s on any pc3700 ram correct? Could someone explain what the benefits of Ehanced bandwith are?

Sorry to ask so many questions, as long as I keep learning, maybe I'll be able to help answer some questions around here.

you prolly wont get 3.7gb/s if using single channle might be a little under... if you run dual channle you will get higher mem. bandwidth.... i get 4.2gb/s and im running the mem at ddr340 1:1 ratio timing at 2-3-3-5 with ram in sig. its ok to run your mem underclocked. From reading around Intel cpus like ram with loose timeings and high fsb's and Amd like tight timing. Well since your looking at the ocz ram i vote for the EB's loosen the timings on that ram and overclock'em :attn:
we were all learning and still are...dont worry about asking questions.
