Hi folks,

Good news for Abit owners who've struggled with capacitor problems, a class action lawsuit is in the process of settlement and you can get your mobos repaired for free it appears.

see this site for full details....

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I searched for it and couldn't find it. Posted in general because it applies to AMD and Intel boards.

Well actually, many manufacturers had this same problem, OEMs as well, pinning them down on it and getting enough users together to take action though has been a bit like nailing jello to the wall. I think it's only because Abit sold a lot of boards and was a known name that they managed to get hung on the hook for it. If you don't have one of the boards listed on the first page of the site, then you're probably okay, you may even be okay if you do have one, because they used capacitors from a lot of different sources. As far as I am aware all manufacturers have got a handle on the original problem.

However, there may be a second round of cap problems because quality caps got so expensive, that manufacturers looked for other sources, and some of those other sources, have turned out to be forgeries of quality brand name capacitors, that may begin leaking (You'd have thought they'd have wondered how they could get the "same" product cheaper than from the manufacturer, but noooo  ) This is just starting though and we don't know whose boards will be most heavily affected by it, and whether they will fess up and treat users more honestly this time or what.

Just thought I'd give this a bump seeing as the date for submitting an objection is fast approaching. Above link is still good, so check your closets, and find those old boards and reciepts.

No hoax, not all boards got Rubycons on them. However there are Rubycon forgeries around and a near forgery called Rulycon, which is easier to spot if you read the name carefully.

You think cap problems are bad though, the next thing is forged semiconductors. We'll be seeing boards with apparently quality brand name Toshiba or Motorola MOSFETs on having them blow out at half thier rated power or less.....

Guys in the audio enthusiast communities are getting raped by this at the moment, due to initial focus on forging high profit margin, low noise, high output transistors for amplifiers. You can bet it will spread into other electronics over the next year or two.

I was a victim of bad caps on an Abit BE6. I just replaced them myself, verified the board was stable and sold it on eBay(this was a couple of years ago though). The BE6 was in an assembled system I bought around 1999, and was not purchased separately.
