Okay, I am trying fruitlessly to start up a brandnew abit kt7a board. I've got everything pluged in and hit the power button only to get

1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps.

I checked the web and it says

1 Long, then 2 Short Beeps: Video error
Explanation: The BIOS is unable to access the video system in order to write any error messages to the screen. Diagnosis: This is usually caused by a problem with the video card, or the memory on the video card. It can also be a motherboard issue

Fine. The videocard works in my p2 233 fine. It's a diamond viper 330 apg card. 4megs ram. Yes, i know it's a beater of a card. But it should still work right?

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

or do i need a newer videocard?

thanks

did you try reseating and/or removing screw holding the card?

If you using a geforce 256 it has compatibility problems. Some other cards do too. But don't worry, I got mine working by using one of two things...

1...You can try seating the card in correctly and resetting the BIOS (Jumper found under the ram, take it off and power and put it back on and power)
2...You can try enabling an option in bios (May be hard to do I suppose) called force ESCD update.

Updating bios might help too.

Holy poop! 4megs of Ram why are you putting that in a high performace board anyway! Upgrade! Seriously that 4meg of ram is just going to slow the crap out of your system (Bottleneck)! Your right on the 1 long 2 short code though always a video card! Might be incompatible. Try different card and set BIOS AGP Aperature to 4mb. Might clear it up since the boards default is 64mb.

Just another shot in the dark!

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll give that a try later tomorrow.

The system is running with the wussy 4 meg card at the moment. But if i power it down, i'll have trouble getting going again.

Strange.

Gus, calm down... not all of us can afford the newest and the greatest... I still have problems with my GF2GTS, usually has to do with card orientation... AGP slots are finniky... thats their nature, make sure that your card is in perfectly straight, and it may be that the bracket that you screw into is not straight, if so, remove the screw, and try GENTLY wiggling the board, first up, then try to boot, if still no go, press the card's top toward the bottom of the case. it's not the card, just the connector
