Hi,

I have a friend of mine wants to install ACT! 2005 on his two PC network. He is currently using an older version of act (unsure which version). Right now my friend has one other employee who has his own stand alone ACT! Database on the employees PC, & my friend has his own database on his PC. He wants to combine both databases into one big database & upgrade to ACT! 2005.

He would like to add a third PC (server) to be the dedicated ACT! 2005 PC. That third PC will at some later point be used by a secretary in the office (when one is hired in a few months). He wants to be able to update the data remotely while he is on the road (same for the other employee as well).

Question – Is it possible to do a “web” interface of ACT! 2005, like you can do an exchange server inbox via the web, or would you need to have a PC with ACT! 2005 installed & then access it across a TCP-IP network? I would love the option of both, but to me, the most important thing would be for a PC with the ACT! 2005 software installed on it to be able to update across a network.

A few things I think we need, a Static IP address. We would need to redirect the ACT! 2005 ports to the third PC (server) so it could stay behind the firewall, but still be accessible for ACT! 2005 data.

If we are dealing with a 90 meg ACT! File, how well will this work? It seems to me, that on dialup, it would be tough to get it working properly.

The other thing I was thinking was to install ACT! 2005 only on the Server PC, & then install Citrix or PC Anywhere on the other PC’s to give them access to the data. That would alleviate the problem of needing to download a 90 meg file across a network or on dialup, but it also makes the data completely inaccessible if the PC’s are not connected to the network. Also if the Citrix client is closed, the appointment & other notifications would be non existent.

Any ideas on what would be a good solution to this puzzle?

Also, if there is a better ACT! Forum, please let me know.

Thanks,
Rich
