Advantage to having RAID??

very untechnically raid 0, two identical drives.computer sees as 1 drive and retrives data from both simultainously effectively doubling drive bandwidth.
raid 1,two or more drives.redundancy,if one drive fails, info willnot be lost and could theoretically work without interuption on the good one.this also includes error checking between drives but for the tech info see www.maximumpc.com they had a good article on the raid setups.
i realize this is not much info but for gamers raid 0 performs great and should be included in any high end gaming machine.

there is a little advantage to using raid 0, also, if you don't use raid right now, you still have the two ata100 connectors, and you would still have the option of using raid later on if you wanted.

I've a IDE raid setup here on my Epox 8kta3 (the raid is Not onboard one, as I've got the raid before I got this board). I uses 2 IBM 75GXP 30Gb hd and put them on a Raid 0 using an IWill SIDE ATA100 raid card.

The preformance of having raid 0 is AWESOME! :)

since I've a 1.2ghz cpu system I think I shouldn't let the CPU/Ram wait too long to pull data from the HD... that's y I get the Raid... also, everything load up much faster!! When I play Quake3 online, I'm Always the 1st to get in : ))

if you want super fast HD preformance IDE Raid 0 is a pretty good solution! Good luck!

Raid one is very limited in it's advantages, Benches well, but real world performance increases are negligible. I no longer bother with it.

One advantage to buying a Raid board vs non-Raid is that if you do not use the board in Raid mode you can use it as Ata100 IDE connectors. So you have potential to have up to 8 IDE devices without adding an expansion card for more IDE connectors vs 4 IDE devices with the Raid board.

Are you speaking of RAID 0? The point of RAID 1 is not speed but safety... I agree that RAID 0 is highly overrated. Someone above suggested that RAID 0 was great for gaming. Please explain to me exactly how? Any game that is running off the harddrive, be it swapping textures or virtual memory is going to RUN SLOW. It will not matter whether your hard drive is 5400 rpm, 7200 rpm or whether you are running a RAID 0 setup. Your hard drive is so many times slower than EVERY other component in the system that speeding it up is going to make negligible difference. And it's certainly not going to do anything for you in games...

Maybe it would make the game install faster-- oh whoops! Almost forgot the CD-ROM drive is slower than the hard drive too, so even there you will see no benefit.

to the guy who asked the question, there is a link on the homepage here that explains this much better than i could and shows performance advantages over single ide setups.
as for the gaming inquirey , a 12 or 13 percent advantage is 12 or 13 percent faster.negligable? as i said,High end gaming machines will include raid 0.
is a 10 percent overclock for a cpu negligable?

Well....I live out in the country....and let me tell you....I wouldn't even think about stepping outside without my trusty can of raid. LOTS of skeeters, flys, spiders, and every wasp you can imagine.

Not really sure what a computer could use it for though.........

My bad, ment RAID O. As for RAID 1. unless you run a server, I would think you would be better off with GHOST, As in RAID 1 only provides a back up for hard drive failure, GHOST will do that as well, Slight delay as you switch manually over to your GHOST drive. But it also gives you a back up in case of file corruption.
